Bed Leveling Failed / Probing Failed

Creality 3D Printer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Bed Leveling Failed means the auto-leveling probe could not complete its measurement sequence. The probe may be too high, too low, not triggering properly, or the bed is too far from level for the probe to compensate. Adjust the Z-offset and make sure the probe is working.

Affected Models

  • Creality Ender 3 S1
  • Creality Ender 3 V3
  • Creality CR-10 Smart
  • Any Creality with CR Touch or BLTouch

Common Causes

  • Z-offset not set correctly — probe cannot reach the bed
  • CR Touch or BLTouch probe not deploying properly
  • Probe wiring loose or disconnected
  • Bed is severely warped or tilted beyond probe range
  • Probe pin stuck in the up position

How to Fix It

  1. Check that the probe pin deploys and retracts smoothly.

Push the pin up gently with your finger — it should spring back down. If it sticks, clean it or replace the probe.

  2. Adjust the Z-offset.

The Z-offset tells the printer the distance between the probe and the nozzle tip. If it is wrong, the probe may try to probe above or below the bed surface.

  3. Manually level the bed roughly before running auto-leveling.

Auto bed leveling compensates for small variations, not major tilt. Use the manual knobs to get the bed roughly level first.

  4. Check the probe wiring connection to the mainboard.

A loose connector can cause intermittent probe failures. Make sure the 5-pin connector is firmly seated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need to level the bed with auto-leveling?

Roughly, yes. Auto bed leveling (ABL) compensates for small imperfections. But if the bed is severely tilted, ABL cannot compensate enough and will fail.

What is the difference between CR Touch and BLTouch?

CR Touch is Creality's own probe (metal pin, more durable). BLTouch is made by Antclabs (plastic pin, widely used). Both do the same job — measure bed height at multiple points.
