Filament Runout

Creality 3D Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Filament Runout means the filament sensor detected that the filament spool is empty or the filament broke. The printer pauses so you can load new filament and resume. Load a new spool and follow the resume procedure.

Affected Models

  • Creality Ender 3 S1
  • Creality Ender 3 V3
  • Creality CR-10 Smart
  • Creality printers with filament runout sensor

Common Causes

  • Filament spool is empty — completely used up
  • Filament broke mid-spool (brittle filament)
  • Filament tangled on the spool and cannot feed
  • Filament runout sensor triggered by a false alarm
  • Sensor wiring loose

How to Fix It

  1. Check if the filament is actually out.

Look at the spool — if it is empty, load a new spool. If filament remains, it may have broken or tangled.

  2. If the filament broke: remove the remaining piece from the Bowden tube.

Release the Bowden coupler and pull out the broken piece. Then insert fresh filament.

  3. Load new filament and resume the print.

Feed new filament through the sensor and into the extruder. Use the printer menu to resume the paused print.

  4. If it is a false alarm: check the sensor and its wiring.

Dust or debris in the sensor can trigger false runouts. Clean the sensor slot and check the cable connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resume a print after filament runout?

Yes, if the printer has a filament runout sensor. It pauses the print and waits for new filament. The print resumes from exactly where it stopped.

Why does filament break mid-spool?

Old or improperly stored filament absorbs moisture and becomes brittle. Store filament in a dry box with desiccant to prevent this.
