SD Card Not Reading / No Files

Creality 3D Printer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Creality printer does not see files on the SD card, the card may be in the wrong format, the filename too long, or the card not fully inserted. Format the card as FAT32, use short filenames, and reinsert.

Affected Models

  • Creality Ender 3
  • Creality Ender 3 V2
  • Creality Ender 5
  • Creality CR-10
  • Most Creality printers

Common Causes

  • SD card formatted as exFAT or NTFS instead of FAT32
  • Filenames too long or containing special characters
  • Card not fully inserted
  • Card corrupted
  • Card larger than 32GB (FAT32 formatting issues on large cards)

How to Fix It

  1. Format the SD card as FAT32.

Right-click the card in Windows > Format > select FAT32. For cards larger than 32GB, use a tool like guiformat to force FAT32.

  2. Keep filenames short and simple — under 20 characters.

Use only letters, numbers, and underscores. Avoid spaces and special characters. Example: cube_test.gcode (good) vs My Super Cool Print v2 (final).gcode (bad)

  3. Place .gcode files in the root of the card, not in folders.

Some Creality firmware cannot browse subfolders. Put your files directly on the card, not inside folders.

  4. Try a different SD card (8GB or 16GB recommended).

The included Creality SD cards are often low quality. A name-brand 8-16GB card is more reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Creality use SD cards instead of USB?

Some Creality printers support USB, but SD cards are more reliable for long prints. A USB connection can disconnect if the computer sleeps, ruining the print.

Can I use a microSD with adapter?

Yes, but the adapter adds a point of failure. If you have issues, try a full-size SD card instead.
