Z-Axis Not Moving

Elegoo 3D Printer (Resin)

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Z-axis not moving means the build plate cannot raise or lower. The most common cause is a jammed lead screw, loose motor coupler, or motor driver failure. Lubricate the lead screw and check all connections before replacing parts.

Affected Models

  • Elegoo Mars 4
  • Elegoo Mars 3
  • Elegoo Saturn 3
  • Elegoo Saturn 2

Common Causes

  • Lead screw dry or dirty — needs lubrication
  • Motor coupler loose or slipping on the shaft
  • Stepper motor driver overheating and shutting off
  • Firmware issue causing Z-axis to not initialise
  • Build plate physically blocked or stuck in resin

How to Fix It

  1. Try homing the Z-axis from the touchscreen menu.

Go to Tools → Move → Home Z. Listen for any motor noise. If you hear a hum but no movement, the lead screw is likely jammed.

  2. Lubricate the lead screw with PTFE-based lubricant.

Apply a thin line of white lithium grease or PTFE lubricant along the full length of the lead screw. Move the build plate up and down manually (with power OFF) to spread the lubricant.

  3. Check the motor coupler is tight.

The flexible coupler connects the stepper motor shaft to the lead screw. If it is loose, the motor spins but the lead screw does not move. Tighten the set screws on both sides.

  4. Let the printer cool down for 30 minutes.

Stepper motor drivers have thermal protection. If the driver overheats, the Z-axis stops moving until it cools. Ensure the printer has adequate ventilation.

  5. Re-flash the firmware.

Download the latest firmware from the Elegoo website for your exact model. Install via USB. A firmware re-flash fixes software-side Z initialisation failures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move the Z-axis manually?

Yes — with the printer powered OFF you can turn the lead screw by hand. This is useful for freeing a stuck build plate from cured resin.

Is the lead screw or the stepper motor replaceable?

Both are standard parts available from Elegoo and third-party suppliers. Most Z-axis failures are the coupler or lubrication — motor failure is rare but does happen.
