Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
Carrier AC E1 error means the indoor temperature sensor (thermistor) has failed or its reading is outside the valid range. A power cycle clears transient E1 faults. Persistent E1 means the sensor needs replacement.

Common Causes
- Indoor temperature sensor (thermistor) failed — open or short circuit
- Thermistor connector loose on the PCB
- Thermistor wire damaged or pinched during installation
- PCB fault preventing correct sensor reading
- Very high ambient temperature pushing sensor out of valid range
How to Fix It

Power cycle the unit.
Switch off the circuit breaker for the AC for 5 minutes. Restore power and switch the unit back on. Transient E1 errors caused by temporary sensor reading spikes are cleared by a full power cycle.

Check room temperature extremes.
Carrier temperature sensors have a valid operating range. If the room temperature is extremely high (above 50°C) or very low (below -10°C), the sensor may flag an out-of-range reading as E1. Ventilate the room and try again under normal temperature conditions.

Inspect the sensor wiring (qualified technician).
If E1 persists after a power cycle and room temperature is normal, the sensor wire or its connector on the main PCB is likely loose or damaged. This requires opening the indoor unit and checking the thermistor connector — a job for a technician.

If E1 persists after a power cycle, the temperature sensor or its connection to the PCB needs inspection and replacement by a qualified HVAC technician.
