Flashing Light

Carrier Air Conditioner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A flashing light on a Carrier AC indicates an error code or a protection mode (high/low pressure, temperature, drain). Count the number of flashes in each cycle — the count identifies the fault code. Check your Carrier model's manual for the flash-to-code mapping.

Affected Models

  • Carrier Split System AC
  • Carrier Inverter AC
  • Carrier Mini-Split AC
  • Carrier Ductless AC

Common Causes

  • Error code being signalled via flash pattern
  • High pressure protection activated — outdoor unit airflow restricted
  • Low pressure protection — low refrigerant or blocked filter
  • Drain float protection triggered — E4 fault
  • Communication fault between indoor and outdoor units

How to Fix It

  1. Count the flash pattern.

Watch the flashing indicator and count the number of flashes before it pauses. The count maps to a specific error code. For example, 4 flashes typically represents E4 (drain fault) on most Carrier mini-split models.

  2. Look up the error code in your model manual.

Flash patterns are model-specific on Carrier units. Find your model number on the indoor unit label and look up the flash-to-error mapping in the service manual. Carrier manuals are available on the Carrier website under the Support section.

  3. Power cycle the unit.

Switch off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. Restore power. If the flashing was caused by a transient protection event (brief voltage spike, momentary high pressure), a power cycle often clears it.

  4. Check for common protection triggers.

Before calling a technician, check: (1) the air filter is clean, (2) the outdoor unit has clear airflow, (3) the condensate drain is not blocked. These are the three most common causes of protection mode activation on Carrier units.

When to Call a Professional

If counting the flash pattern and cross-referencing the Carrier service manual reveals a refrigerant, compressor, or communication error, call a Carrier-authorised HVAC technician.
