Not Cooling

Carrier Air Conditioner

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

If your Carrier AC is running but not cooling, clean the air filter first — clogged filters reduce cooling by up to 40%. Also confirm the unit is set to Cool mode and that the set temperature is lower than the current room temperature.

Affected Models

  • Carrier Split System AC
  • Carrier Inverter AC
  • Carrier Mini-Split AC
  • Carrier Ductless AC
  • Carrier Window Unit AC

Common Causes

  • Clogged air filter restricting airflow
  • Mode set to Fan, Dry, or Auto with no cooling demand
  • Outdoor unit blocked or condenser fins dirty
  • Low refrigerant from a slow leak
  • Compressor not engaging — capacitor or relay fault
  • Oversized room for the unit's BTU capacity

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the air filter.

Open the front cover of the indoor unit and slide out the filters. Wash them with warm water and a soft brush. Allow to dry fully before reinstalling. Dirty filters are the number one cause of reduced cooling on all Carrier mini-splits.

  2. Verify mode and temperature setting.

Press the Mode button on the remote until the display shows the snowflake (Cool) icon. Set the temperature at least 3°C below the current room temperature. If the room is already at or below the set temperature, the unit will not activate the compressor.

  3. Inspect and clean the outdoor unit.

Check that the outdoor unit is not surrounded by overgrown plants, leaves, or fencing that blocks airflow. Gently hose down the condenser fins to remove dust and debris. The outdoor unit needs at least 50 cm of clear space on all sides.

  4. Check for ice formation on the indoor unit.

If frost or ice is visible on the copper refrigerant pipes near the indoor unit, switch to Fan mode for 2 hours to defrost. Icing indicates insufficient airflow (dirty filter) or low refrigerant.

When to Call a Professional

If the filter is clean, the mode is correct, and the outdoor unit has good airflow, but the AC blows warm air, the system is likely low on refrigerant or has a compressor fault — call a Carrier-authorised technician.
