Remote Control Not Working

Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

If the Mitsubishi Electric remote is not working, replace the AA or AAA batteries first. Aim the remote directly at the indoor unit's receiver window and ensure nothing is between them.

Affected Models

  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZ Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric SRK Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZAP Series
  • Mitsubishi Electric MSZEF Series

Common Causes

  • Dead or depleted batteries
  • Remote in Hold or Child Lock mode
  • Infrared receiver on indoor unit dirty or obstructed
  • Remote dropped and infrared LED damaged
  • Hotel mode or Central Control overriding the remote

How to Fix It

  1. Replace the batteries.

Open the battery compartment (usually on the back of the remote) and insert fresh AA or AAA batteries. Replace both batteries simultaneously — mixing old and new reduces performance.

  2. Test the remote with a phone camera.

Open your phone camera and point the remote's front tip at it. Press any button while watching through the camera screen. A white or purple flash visible through the camera confirms the infrared transmitter is working.

  3. Check for Hold mode.

Some Mitsubishi Electric remotes have a Hold button that locks all settings in place and prevents button inputs. Look for a 'Hold' indicator on the remote's LCD screen. Press and hold the Hold button for 3 seconds to disable it.

  4. Clean the indoor unit receiver.

The IR receiver is a small dark window on the front face of the indoor unit. Wipe it gently with a dry cloth. Curtains, plants, or blinds close to the unit can block the signal even when the remote appears to be aimed correctly.

  5. Check for Central Control or Hotel Mode.

In hotel, commercial, or shared apartments, the AC may be under Central Control which overrides or locks out the room remote. If this applies to your situation, contact building management — they control the override settings.
