Remote Not Working
Samsung Air Conditioner
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
If your Samsung AC remote is not working, replace the batteries first — this fixes the majority of remote control issues. Also clean the IR sensor window on the indoor unit with a dry cloth, as dust can block the signal.
Affected Models
- Samsung Wind-Free AC
- Samsung Split System AC
- Samsung Inverter AC
- Samsung Multi-Split AC
Common Causes
- Dead or weak batteries
- Obstruction between the remote and the indoor unit IR sensor
- Dust covering the IR sensor on the indoor unit
- Remote control damaged or IR emitter failed
- Strong sunlight or fluorescent lighting interfering with the IR signal
- IR sensor on the indoor unit failed
How to Fix It
-
Replace the batteries.
Open the battery compartment on the back of the remote and replace both batteries with fresh AA or AAA batteries. Even batteries that are only 50% discharged can cause intermittent remote failures.
-
Test the IR signal with a smartphone camera.
Point the remote at your phone's front camera (or rear camera on older phones) and press any button. If the remote is working, you will see a faint purple or white flash from the IR emitter through the camera screen. No flash means the remote's IR emitter is dead.
-
Clean the IR sensor on the indoor unit.
The IR receiver on the indoor unit is a small dark window on the front panel. Wipe it gently with a dry cloth to remove dust. Stand directly in front of the unit and point the remote at the sensor from no more than 5 metres away.
-
Reset the remote control.
Remove the batteries from the remote and press every button once to discharge residual power. Reinsert fresh batteries. Some Samsung remotes have a small Reset pinhole — press it with a straightened paper clip.
When to Call a Professional
If the batteries are new, there is no obstruction, and pointing the remote directly at the sensor from close range does not work, the IR sensor on the indoor unit has failed — a technician should replace it.
