Loud Noise

Ninja Air Fryer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Loud rattling from a Ninja air fryer is most often caused by a basket that is not fully seated. Remove the basket and push it back in firmly until you hear a click. Also check for food debris that may have entered the fan area.

Affected Models

  • Ninja AF101
  • Ninja AF161
  • Ninja DZ201
  • Ninja DZ401
  • All Ninja Air Fryer models

Common Causes

  • Basket not fully clicked into place — vibrates at fan speed
  • Food debris inside the fan area creating grinding sound
  • Loose rack or tray rattling during cooking
  • Normal brief fan start-up noise at full speed
  • Worn fan bearing in older units

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the basket and push it back in firmly until you hear an audible click.

A loose basket vibrates violently at fan speed. The click confirms the safety latch has engaged. Push harder than seems necessary.

  2. Look inside the cooking chamber with a torch and check for loose food debris.

Small crumbs can fall into the fan area through the back of the basket. Remove visible debris carefully with a dry brush.

  3. Check that all racks and trays inside are correctly positioned and flat.

Metal racks rattle if slightly off their supports. Remove, reposition, and ensure they sit level and stable.

  4. Run the unit empty for 2 minutes and listen for the noise pattern.

Noise only with the basket inserted points to a loose basket or tray. Noise with the basket removed points to the fan motor.

When to Call a Professional

A continuous metal-on-metal grinding sound that does not stop after cleaning and reseating the basket points to a worn fan bearing. Contact Ninja support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is some noise normal from a Ninja air fryer?

Yes — a consistent fan hum is completely normal. A brief noise spike when the fan reaches full speed at start-up is also expected. Continuous rattling, clunking, or grinding throughout cooking is not normal.

My Ninja makes a clicking sound every few minutes — is that normal?

Occasional clicking is normal — it is the heating element cycling on and off to maintain temperature. Continuous clicking or clicking combined with smoke or burning smells should be investigated immediately.
