Timer Not Working
Ninja Air Fryer
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
If the Ninja air fryer timer is not counting down, the basket is likely not inserted correctly — the unit will not start if it cannot detect the basket. Remove the basket, reinsert it firmly, and press Start again.
Affected Models
- Ninja AF101
- Ninja AF161
- Ninja DZ201 DualZone
- Ninja DZ401
- Ninja Foodi 5-in-1
Common Causes
- Basket not fully seated — safety sensor prevents the cycle from starting
- Start button pressed but basket removed mid-cycle, pausing the timer
- Unit in standby mode — timer reset to zero after inactivity
- Control panel unresponsive due to moisture or a temporary firmware glitch
- Child lock accidentally activated
How to Fix It
-
Remove and firmly re-insert the basket, then press Start.
Ninja air fryers use a magnetic safety sensor. If the basket is even slightly misaligned, the unit will appear to do nothing when you press Start and the timer will not count down.
-
Check whether the child lock is enabled.
On most Ninja models, the child lock is activated by holding the Start/Stop button for 3 seconds. A lock icon appears on screen. Hold Start/Stop again for 3 seconds to unlock.
-
Set the temperature and time manually before pressing Start.
Some Ninja models require you to set both time and temperature before the Start button becomes active. Set your temperature, then use the time arrows to set a cooking time, then press Start.
-
Unplug for 60 seconds and plug back in.
A full power reset clears any software freeze. Do not just switch off at the button — unplug from the wall.
-
Wipe the control panel with a dry cloth.
Moisture on the touch panel can cause phantom touches or prevent buttons from registering. Ensure the panel is completely dry before use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Ninja timer beep but then reset to zero?
This is normal end-of-cycle behaviour — Ninja air fryers beep several times and return the timer to zero when the cooking time is complete.
Can I add time during cooking on a Ninja air fryer?
Yes. Press the time arrows while the unit is running to add or reduce cooking time. On DualZone models, make sure you select the correct zone first.
