Smoking

Philips Air Fryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Your Philips air fryer is producing smoke while cooking. This is almost always caused by grease or food residue burning on the heating element — not a fault with the appliance. Regular cleaning after fatty cooks prevents this entirely.

Affected Models

  • Philips HD9252
  • Philips HD9270
  • Philips HD9630
  • Philips HD9741 XXL
  • Philips HD9860

Common Causes

  • Accumulated grease on the heating element
  • Fatty foods producing excess dripping grease
  • Food residue stuck to the basket or drawer
  • Aerosol cooking spray residue burning off
  • First use — factory coating burning off (normal)

How to Fix It

  1. Stop cooking and unplug if there is heavy smoke or a burning plastic smell.

Light steam from cooking juices is normal. Thick grey or black smoke means something is burning that should not be.

  2. After cooling, wash the basket, drawer insert, and grill pan with warm soapy water.

The Philips Airfryer basket and drawer are dishwasher safe on most models. A thorough wash removes the grease causing the smoke.

  3. Wipe the inside of the drawer housing and around the heating element with a damp cloth.

Grease splatter on the inner walls and element area is the primary smoke source. Wipe clean after every 3-4 uses.

  4. When cooking fatty foods, add a slice of bread or 2 tablespoons of water under the basket.

The bread absorbs dripping grease; the water turns it to steam. Both prevent burning smoke effectively.

When to Call a Professional

Smoking from the exhaust is almost never a hardware fault. If you smell burning plastic or see sparks, unplug immediately and contact Philips support.

Frequently Asked Questions

My brand new Philips air fryer smoked on the first use — is it faulty?

No — this is completely normal. New Philips Airfryers have a protective coating that burns off on first use, producing a small amount of smoke and a plastic smell. Philips recommends running the unit empty at 180C for 10 minutes before first use to burn this off safely.

How often should I clean my Philips air fryer to prevent smoking?

Clean the basket and drawer after every use. Wipe down the interior walls every 3-5 uses. Check and clean the heating element every 10-15 uses or whenever you cook fatty foods. This routine prevents grease buildup entirely.
