Not Turning On

Alen Air Purifier

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

An Alen BreatheSmart that will not turn on is most often caused by the magnetic front panel not being fully attached — the unit will not run if the panel is ajar. Press the front panel firmly onto the magnet points, confirm the outlet has power, and press the power button once.

Affected Models

  • Alen BreatheSmart 45i
  • Alen BreatheSmart 75i
  • Alen BreatheSmart FLEX
  • Alen T500

Common Causes

  • Magnetic front panel is not fully attached — safety interlock prevents power-on
  • No power at the wall outlet
  • Child lock is active
  • Unit needs a power cycle after a brief power interruption

How to Fix It

  1. Press the magnetic front panel firmly against the unit until it seats on all four magnet points. The unit will not start if the panel is even slightly ajar.

The magnet system is Alen's design for easy filter access. It also acts as a safety switch — the unit detects whether the panel is attached before allowing operation.

  2. Check that the wall outlet has power and that the power cord is firmly plugged in at both ends.

  3. Check whether child lock is active. On BreatheSmart 45i and 75i, hold the lock icon button for 3 seconds to toggle child lock on or off.

  4. Unplug the unit for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and press the power button.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Alen BreatheSmart powers on for a second then shuts off — what is happening?

A brief startup followed by immediate shutdown almost always means the front panel is not fully seated. The unit starts, detects the open panel via its safety switch, and shuts down. Press the front panel firmly from top to bottom until all magnet points click into place.
