Smell / Odor

Alen Air Purifier

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A smell from an Alen BreatheSmart air purifier is usually caused by a new filter off-gassing during the first 24–48 hours of use — this is harmless and fades quickly. An ongoing musty smell from an older filter means the filter has absorbed odors and needs replacing. Alen offers odor-specific filter variants (Fresh, Smoke, Heavy Odor) if odor control is a priority.

Affected Models

  • Alen BreatheSmart 45i
  • Alen BreatheSmart 75i
  • Alen BreatheSmart FLEX

Common Causes

  • New filter off-gassing on first use — normal, clears within 48 hours
  • Old filter saturated with captured odors and redistributing them
  • Filter is past its service life and no longer trapping new odors

How to Fix It

  1. If the smell is from a new filter installation, run the unit on maximum speed in a ventilated room for 24–48 hours. The off-gassing smell from new activated carbon and HEPA media dissipates quickly.

This is completely normal and not harmful. Alen Fresh and Heavy Odor filter variants have more activated carbon and may have a slightly stronger initial smell.

  2. If the filter is more than 6 months old and the unit smells musty, replace the filter. An old filter can hold moisture and odors.

Alen offers four filter variants: HEPA Pure (standard), HEPA Fresh (light odor), HEPA Smoke (smoke and heavy odors), HEPA OdorCell (very heavy odor) — upgrade to a higher odor-control variant if needed.

  3. Wipe down the interior filter chamber and the front panel with a dry cloth to remove any accumulated dust or debris.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Alen filter is best for pet odors?

Alen recommends the HEPA Smoke or HEPA OdorCell filter for strong pet odors. Both include a thicker layer of activated carbon compared to the standard HEPA Pure filter. All Alen filters fit the same BreatheSmart chassis.
