Poor Filtration
Honeywell Air Purifier
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Honeywell air purifier that seems to have stopped cleaning the air is most often running with an overdue HEPA filter or a filter that is not properly seated. If the HEPA filter is grey or brown and more than 12 months old, replace it. Also check that no packaging film was left on the new filter and that the grille is fully closed.
Affected Models
- HPA100
- HPA200
- HPA300
- HPA600
Common Causes
- HEPA filter is past its service life and saturated with particles
- New filter was installed with the plastic packaging film still attached
- Filter is not seated squarely, leaving gaps that let unfiltered air bypass it
- Unit is too small for the room size it is placed in
How to Fix It
-
Check the filter replacement indicator. If it is lit, replace the HEPA filter. Even if the light is not on, inspect the filter — a visibly dark or grey filter needs replacement.
HEPA filters do not look cleaner just because the indicator has been reset. A physically clogged filter passes less air and captures fewer new particles.
-
If the filter was recently replaced, confirm the plastic film was removed from both sides of the new filter before installation.
New Honeywell HEPA filters ship with a clear protective film. Leaving it on completely blocks airflow and filtration.
-
Open the grille and inspect the filter edges. Press the filter firmly into its slot so all four edges are flush against the housing with no visible gaps.
Even a small gap around the filter edge lets unfiltered air pass directly to the outlet without going through the HEPA media.
-
Check the room size. Each HPA model has a rated coverage area. Using an HPA100 in a large open-plan room will not effectively clean the air.
Run the purifier on its highest speed in a smaller, enclosed room to maximize effectiveness.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Honeywell purifier is actually working?
Hold your hand near the air outlet — you should feel a steady stream of air. If airflow is weak or absent, the filter is likely clogged or the grille is not fully closed. Air quality monitors can show particle counts dropping after the purifier has run for 30 minutes in a closed room.
