Not Turning On

Shark Air Purifier

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Shark air purifier that will not turn on is most often caused by the child lock being active, the access panel not fully closed, or a power supply issue. Check that the child lock is not engaged (hold the lock button for 3 seconds to toggle it), confirm the filter access panel is fully latched, and verify the outlet has power.

Affected Models

  • Shark HP102
  • Shark HP200
  • Shark HP201
  • Shark HP300
  • Shark HP301

Common Causes

  • Child lock is active — all buttons are disabled
  • Filter access panel is not fully closed — safety interlock prevents power-on
  • No power at the outlet
  • Power cord not firmly connected

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether the child lock icon is lit on the control panel. If it is, hold the child lock button for 3 seconds to deactivate it.

When child lock is on, pressing the power button has no effect. The lock icon looks like a padlock on most Shark models.

  2. Check that the filter access panel on the back or side of the unit is fully closed and latched.

Shark purifiers have a safety switch that prevents operation if the filter panel is open. Press the panel firmly until it clicks.

  3. Test the wall outlet with another device. If the outlet is dead, check the circuit breaker. Plug the purifier directly into the wall — avoid extension cords.

  4. Unplug the purifier for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and press the power button.

A full power cycle clears any internal fault that may be blocking startup.

Frequently Asked Questions

The power light comes on briefly then goes off — what does that mean?

A brief flash followed by power-off usually means the purifier detected an open panel or an improperly seated filter. Open the filter access panel, remove and firmly reinstall the filter, close the panel, and try again.
