Smell / Odor
Shark Air Purifier
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A smell from a Shark air purifier is most often caused by a new HEPA filter off-gassing during its first few hours of use — this is normal and fades within 24 hours. A musty smell from an older unit usually means the pre-filter or internal surfaces need cleaning. A burning smell means the unit should be unplugged immediately.
Affected Models
- Shark HP102
- Shark HP200
- Shark HP201
- Shark HP300
- Shark HP301
Common Causes
- New filter off-gassing during first use — normal, fades within 24 hours
- Pre-filter is dirty and distributing captured odors back into the air
- Mold or mildew growth on the pre-filter or internal housing
- Burning smell — electrical fault (unplug immediately)
How to Fix It
-
If the smell started after installing a new filter, run the purifier on its highest setting in a ventilated room for 24 hours. New HEPA filters off-gas a faint plastic or chemical smell that dissipates quickly.
This is harmless and does not indicate a defective filter. Opening a window during this period speeds up the process.
-
Remove and inspect the pre-filter. If it is visibly dirty or has a musty smell, wash it under cool running water and allow it to dry completely before reinserting.
A wet pre-filter put back into the unit will grow mold quickly. Allow at least 2 hours of air-drying time.
-
Wipe the interior surfaces of the filter chamber with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Check for any visible mold spots and wipe them off.
Do not use bleach or strong cleaners inside the unit — residues can damage the filter and release fumes.
-
If you smell burning, unplug the unit immediately and do not use it. Contact Shark support for a warranty assessment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Shark purifier smell worse when I increase the fan speed?
Higher fan speeds push more air through a dirty pre-filter or across dusty internal surfaces. Cleaning or replacing the pre-filter almost always resolves odor that increases with fan speed.
