Not Turning On

Winix Air Purifier

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Press and hold the Power button for 2 seconds — a brief tap is not enough on some Winix models. Check the wall socket is working and the power cable is firmly inserted at both ends. If the display shows a locked padlock symbol, Child Lock is active — hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds to disable it.

Affected Models

  • Winix 5500-2
  • Winix C545
  • Winix AM90
  • Winix HR900
  • Winix Zero Pro

Common Causes

  • Child Lock enabled — all buttons are disabled including the power button
  • Wall socket switched off or on a tripped circuit
  • Power cable not fully seated at the machine end
  • Machine in deep standby after a long period of no use
  • Internal thermal protection triggered by overheating — machine shuts down and requires cooling time

How to Fix It

  1. Press and hold the Power button for 2 seconds. Do not just tap it — Winix models typically require a held press to power on from standby.

A quick tap can register as a button press without triggering power on some models.

  2. Test the wall socket with another device. Check the circuit breaker if the socket is dead. Try plugging the Winix directly into the wall rather than through a power strip.

Power strips with built-in surge protectors can sometimes trip their internal fuse after a power surge, blocking power to all connected devices.

  3. Check for Child Lock. If the display shows a lock icon or no buttons are responding, hold the Child Lock button for 3 seconds to release it.

On models without a dedicated Child Lock button, consult the manual for the unlock combination — it varies by model.

  4. If the machine was recently running and shut off unexpectedly, let it sit unplugged for 20 minutes to cool. Winix machines have thermal protection that shuts them down if they overheat.

Overheating is most common when the machine is placed in a confined space with restricted airflow around the vents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Winix display lights up but fan does not run — what does it mean?

The display receiving power but the fan not spinning usually points to a Sleep Timer keeping the fan off, or the fan speed is set to 0 in a custom mode. Check the timer and speed settings in the control panel. If the fan makes a humming sound but does not spin, there may be an obstruction inside or a motor fault.
