Loud Noise

Xiaomi Air Purifier

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Xiaomi air purifier that has become louder or rattles is most often caused by a filter that is overdue for replacement (restricting airflow and making the motor strain), the back panel not fully latched, or a small piece of debris caught near the fan inlet. Check the filter age first — most users see an immediate noise improvement after a filter change.

Affected Models

  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4
  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Pro
  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Lite
  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3H
  • Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3C

Common Causes

  • HEPA+Carbon filter is overloaded, restricting airflow and forcing the motor to strain
  • Back panel is slightly ajar and vibrates at higher fan speeds
  • Debris at the air intake vibrating against the fan
  • Unit placed on thick carpet that absorbs and re-emits vibration

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Mi Home app and check the filter life percentage. If it is below 20% or at 0%, replace the filter.

A nearly-full filter drastically restricts airflow. The motor compensates by spinning faster, producing more noise. A new filter almost always reduces noise to the original level.

  2. Press the back panel firmly until it clicks. A panel that is even slightly ajar will rattle at medium or high fan speeds.

  3. Unplug the unit. Inspect the air inlet vents on the back panel for any debris — hair, paper, or dust bunnies can vibrate against the fan grille.

  4. Move the purifier to a hard flat floor or a smooth surface. Running on thick carpet can introduce low-frequency vibration.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Xiaomi purifier makes a high-pitched whine — is that a fan problem?

A high-pitched whine that gets worse over time often indicates the fan bearings are wearing out. This is more likely in older units (2+ years of continuous operation). Contact Xiaomi support — fan replacement requires authorized service.
