Smell / Odor
Xiaomi Air Purifier
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A smell from a Xiaomi air purifier is almost always caused by the new combination HEPA+Carbon filter off-gassing during its first 24–48 hours of operation — this is harmless and fades quickly. An old filter that has absorbed too many odors can also re-release them into the air, signaling it is time for a replacement.
Affected Models
- Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4
- Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 4 Pro
- Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3H
- Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier 3C
- Xiaomi Smart Air Purifier 4 Compact
Common Causes
- New filter off-gassing activated carbon and adhesive smells on first use — normal
- Old filter saturated with absorbed odors and redistributing them
- Filter is past its service life and no longer neutralizing new odors
- Burning smell — electrical fault (unplug immediately)
How to Fix It
-
If the smell started after a new filter installation, run the purifier on its highest speed in a ventilated room for 24–48 hours. The off-gassing smell from new activated carbon granules dissipates completely.
This is expected and does not indicate a defective filter. Xiaomi combination HEPA+Carbon filters have a strong activated carbon component that causes a noticeable initial smell.
-
If the filter is more than 6 months old and the unit smells musty or stale, check the filter life in the Mi Home app. Replace the filter if life is below 20%.
Saturated activated carbon stops adsorbing new odors and can begin to re-release previously captured ones.
-
Wipe the interior filter compartment with a dry cloth. Dust that has accumulated inside the housing can also carry odors.
-
If you smell burning or melting plastic, unplug the unit immediately and do not use it. Contact Xiaomi support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Xiaomi Mi Air Purifier filter actually remove odors?
Yes — the combination HEPA+Carbon filter includes activated carbon granules that adsorb common household odors like cooking smells, pet odors, and tobacco. However, activated carbon has a finite capacity. Once saturated (typically 6–12 months), it stops removing odors and needs replacing.
