Door Won't Close

Bosch Dishwasher

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Bosch dishwasher door that will not close is usually blocked by a protruding utensil, a rack pushed slightly out of its track, or a large item overhanging the edge. Check that both racks are pushed fully in and that no cutlery is sticking up above the top rack. If nothing is blocking the door but it still does not latch, the latch mechanism or door hinge needs attention.

Affected Models

  • Bosch 300 Series Dishwasher
  • Bosch 500 Series Dishwasher
  • Bosch 800 Series Dishwasher
  • Bosch SHPM88Z Series
  • Bosch Silence Plus Series

Common Causes

  • Cutlery or utensil protruding above the top rack and hitting the door panel when closing
  • Upper or lower rack not pushed fully into its track — the rack catches on the door frame
  • Large pot or pan overhanging the edge of the lower rack and preventing full door closure
  • Door hinge spring broken or worn — the door drops slightly when open and no longer aligns correctly
  • Door latch striker plate bent or shifted, preventing the latch from catching

How to Fix It

  1. Check for items blocking the door

Pull out both racks fully and look along the top edge of each rack. Tall glasses, spatulas, or serving spoons often protrude above the top rack edge and catch on the door's inner panel. Push all items fully down into the rack slots.

  2. Push both racks fully in

The lower rack must be pushed all the way in on both sides evenly. If one side is slightly further out than the other, the rack can catch on the door opening. Give both sides a firm push to confirm they are seated.

  3. Check the top spray arm

The top spray arm is attached to the top of the upper rack. If it has dropped down or is hanging at an angle, it blocks the door. Lift the upper rack and check the arm clicks firmly into its housing.

  4. Inspect the door latch

With the door open, look at the latch hook on the door panel. Check it is straight and not bent or cracked. Also look at the striker plate on the dishwasher frame — if it is loose or misaligned, tighten its mounting screws.

  5. Check the door hinges

A door that droops when open is a sign of a failing door spring or hinge. Open the door to 45 degrees and let go — it should stay in position. If it falls open on its own, the tension spring has broken and needs replacing (typically $20–40).

When to Call a Professional

If the door is clear of obstructions but still does not latch, the door hinge or latch striker needs adjusting or replacing. This is a straightforward repair — Bosch service can replace a door hinge in 30–45 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bosch dishwasher door bounces back open after closing — why?

The latch spring is too weak to hold the door closed or the striker plate is misaligned. Check the striker plate screws are tight. If the latch hook looks worn or bent, replace the door latch assembly.

Bosch dishwasher door is hard to close and requires a lot of force — why?

The door gasket (the rubber seal around the door frame) may be out of position and bunching up. Check that the gasket is seated evenly in its channel all the way around. A displaced gasket creates resistance when closing.

Bosch dishwasher door was fine yesterday — now it won't close. What changed?

Someone likely loaded a large item at the back of a rack that is now sticking out. Check both racks and the top spray arm first before looking at the latch or hinges.
