E24
Bosch Dishwasher
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Bosch E24 means the dishwasher failed to drain water within the expected time. The drain pump filter is blocked in the majority of cases — cleaning it resolves E24 in under 10 minutes.
Affected Models
- Bosch Series 2
- Bosch Series 4
- Bosch Series 6
- Bosch Series 8
- Bosch SMV series
- Bosch SMS series
Common Causes
- Drain pump filter clogged with food particles, broken glass, or labels
- Drain hose kinked or blocked
- Household drain pipe blocked — not the dishwasher itself
- Air gap or high-loop drain installation blocked
- Drain pump impeller jammed by a foreign object
- Drain pump motor failed
How to Fix It
-
Clean the drain pump filter.
Open the dishwasher door and remove the bottom rack. At the bottom of the machine, you will see a round mesh filter and a flat filter underneath. Twist and lift the round filter anti-clockwise to remove it. Lift out the flat filter below. Rinse both under the tap and use a soft brush to remove all debris. Reassemble filters, run a short wash, and check if E24 is gone.
-
Check and clear the drain hose.
The drain hose runs from the back of the dishwasher to the household drain or under-sink pipe. Check it is not kinked, and that it has not slipped out of the standpipe or sink drain. The hose should curve up to at least 40 cm (16 inches) above floor level before going down — this prevents backflow.
-
Check the household drain.
If the dishwasher drain hose connects to the sink waste pipe, run the sink to check it drains freely. A slow or blocked sink drain will also prevent the dishwasher from draining. Clear any blockage under the sink before retesting the dishwasher.
-
Check for glass or debris in the pump.
Broken glass, olive pits, and small hard objects frequently jam the drain pump impeller. With the filters removed, you can see the pump impeller through the filter cavity. Use tweezers or long-nose pliers to carefully remove any foreign objects. Never put your hand directly into the pump area — broken glass risk.
-
Test or replace the drain pump.
If all blockages are clear and E24 persists, the drain pump motor may have failed electrically. Listening during the drain phase — if the pump hums but water doesn't move, the impeller is jammed. Complete silence indicates an electrical failure. A replacement Bosch drain pump costs £30–£80 and is accessible from inside the machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will E24 on a Bosch dishwasher clear itself?
E24 will not clear itself — the machine stops mid-cycle with water inside and waits for the drainage issue to be resolved. Clean the filter first (inside the machine at the bottom — takes 5 minutes) and run a short programme. In most cases the error will not return once the filter is clean. If it does return, there is a blockage further along the drain hose or the pump has failed.
