White Residue on Dishes
Bosch Dishwasher
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
White film on dishes after a Bosch dishwasher cycle is almost always caused by hard water — minerals deposit on dishes when the water softener is not working correctly. Refill the salt compartment (located in the floor of the dishwasher tub) and check the water hardness setting in the dishwasher's menu. Also make sure the rinse aid dispenser is filled — rinse aid is what makes water run off dishes instead of drying as white spots.
Affected Models
- Bosch 300 Series Dishwasher
- Bosch 500 Series Dishwasher
- Bosch 800 Series Dishwasher
- Bosch SHPM88Z Series
- Bosch Silence Plus Series
Common Causes
- Dishwasher salt compartment empty or nearly empty — water softener not regenerating
- Water hardness setting in the menu is too low for your local water supply
- Rinse aid dispenser empty — water dries on dishes rather than sheeting off
- Rinse aid dosage set too low for the water hardness in your area
- Detergent not fully dissolving — leaving a powdery residue on dishes
How to Fix It
-
Refill the dishwasher salt
Unscrew the salt cap at the bottom of the dishwasher tub (the round lid near the filter). Fill with dishwasher-specific regeneration salt — not table salt, sea salt, or cooking salt. Overfilling is fine; replace the cap tightly.
-
Set the correct water hardness
Check your local water hardness (your water supplier's website lists it in ppm or dH). Go to the dishwasher's programme settings and set the softener level to match. Bosch dishwashers typically have settings from 1–7 or 1–10.
-
Refill the rinse aid
Open the rinse aid dispenser (the small cap next to the detergent drawer). Fill to the maximum line with rinse aid. Without rinse aid, water beads on dishes and dries as white spots.
-
Increase the rinse aid dosage
If you have filled the rinse aid but spots persist, increase the dosage setting. Open the dispenser cap — there is a dial inside with settings from 1–6. Turn it to a higher number for harder water.
-
Run a descaling cycle
If the machine has been operating without salt for some time, limescale has built up on the heating element and interior. Run an empty hot cycle (65°C+) with a dishwasher descaler tablet. This dissolves accumulated limescale.
When to Call a Professional
White residue is almost always a water softening or rinse aid issue — no repair is needed. If residue continues after correcting salt, hardness, and rinse aid, the water inlet valve may have a flow restriction. A technician can test water pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Bosch dishwasher white residue only on glasses — why?
Glass is more susceptible to etching and limescale than ceramic or stainless steel. Check the rinse aid level and ensure the water hardness setting matches your local supply.
Do I need to use dishwasher salt if I use all-in-one tablets?
All-in-one tablets contain some salt, but they are not sufficient for hard water areas. If your water is above 21 dH (375 ppm), use dedicated dishwasher salt in addition to all-in-one tablets.
The white residue wipes off when wet — is it limescale or etching?
If residue wipes off when you apply a damp cloth, it is limescale — removable and fixable. If it does not wipe off and the glass looks permanently hazy, the glass has been chemically etched by too much detergent or very soft water — this is permanent.
