E03
Bosch Oven
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
E03 means the Bosch oven has exceeded its safe operating temperature and the thermal safety cutout has activated. This is a one-time safety device — once triggered, it does not reset automatically. The oven will not heat at all until the safety thermostat is replaced by a technician.
Affected Models
- Bosch HBG Series
- Bosch HBA Series
- Bosch Series 4, 6 and 8 Built-In Ovens
- Bosch HBN Series
- Bosch pyrolytic self-cleaning ovens
Common Causes
- Cooling fan failed — the fan that cools the oven electronics overheated when the fan stopped
- Temperature control thermostat faulty — not cutting the heating elements at the correct temperature
- Oven used at maximum temperature for an extended period in a hot environment
- Ventilation gap above or behind the oven blocked — heat cannot escape from the oven housing
- Pyrolytic self-clean cycle triggered the safety cutout on an older or faulty oven
How to Fix It
-
Switch the oven off at the wall and allow it to cool completely — at least 1 hour.
The oven will not reset by cooling alone — the safety thermostat is a one-time device. But cooling the oven is essential before any technician inspection.
-
Check the ventilation gap above and behind the oven.
Built-in ovens require a specific ventilation gap above the oven door and behind the casing. If items are stored immediately above the oven or the gap has been blocked by a fitting, heat cannot escape.
-
Note whether the cooling fan was running during the last use.
Bosch ovens have a cooling fan that runs during and after use. If you did not hear a fan running (or notice it stopped), the fan may have failed and caused overheating.
-
Call Bosch service — the safety thermostat must be replaced and the cooling system inspected.
A technician will replace the thermal cutout and test the cooling fan and temperature thermostat to find the underlying cause.
When to Call a Professional
E03 always requires a technician — the thermal safety cutout is a one-time device that must be replaced. The root cause of overheating must also be identified to prevent E03 from recurring on the new cutout. Contact Bosch service on 0344 892 8979 (UK).
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my Bosch oven work at all after E03?
No — once the thermal safety cutout has triggered, the oven produces no heat at all. The timer, light, and display may still work, but no heating function will operate. The cutout must be physically replaced by a technician before the oven will heat again.
