E03

Bosch Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

The E03 error on your Bosch washer means it could not drain the water in time. The pump tried to empty the drum but water is still inside. Something is blocking or slowing the drain process.

Affected Models

  • Bosch 300 Series
  • Bosch 500 Series
  • Bosch 800 Series
  • Most Bosch front-load washers

Common Causes

  • The drain pump filter is clogged with lint, coins, or small objects
  • The drain hose is kinked, pinched, or blocked
  • The drain hose is pushed too far into the standpipe, creating a siphon
  • The drain pump itself is jammed or has failed
  • A sock or small garment has gotten past the drum seal into the pump

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the drain pump filter on the front bottom of the washer. Place towels down, open the panel, and slowly twist the filter cap to drain remaining water.

Water will pour out — have a shallow pan or towels ready to catch it.

  2. Pull out the filter and clean it thoroughly. Remove any lint, coins, hair ties, or debris.

This is the most common fix for E03. Check inside the filter housing too.

  3. Check the drain hose behind the washer. Make sure it is not kinked, crushed, or bent sharply.

The hose should have a smooth path from the washer to the standpipe or sink.

  4. Make sure the drain hose is not pushed more than 6 inches into the standpipe. If it is too deep, it can create a siphon effect.

The hose should also be elevated at least 24 inches above the floor.

  5. If the filter is clean and the hose is fine, the drain pump may be jammed or failed. Listen for a humming sound when it tries to drain.

A humming pump means it is running but blocked. No sound means the pump motor may be dead.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and drain hose does not fix the error, the drain pump may need replacing. A technician can test the pump and clear any internal blockages. Expect repair costs of $150–$300 including parts and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the drain pump filter on a Bosch washer?

It is on the front bottom of the machine. There is a small panel or door you can open. Behind it you will find a round cap that twists out. Always have towels ready — water will come out when you open it.

How often should I clean the Bosch washer drain filter?

Bosch recommends cleaning it every one to two months. Regular cleaning prevents the E03 error. It also stops bad smells from building up inside the machine.

Can a clogged filter damage my Bosch washer?

Yes — if the pump has to work too hard against a clog, it can burn out. A new drain pump costs $80–$150 plus labor. Cleaning the filter regularly is much cheaper than replacing the pump.
