Not Brewing

DeLonghi Espresso Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A DeLonghi machine that will not brew or has very slow flow is almost always caused by the machine needing a descale, the water tank being empty or incorrectly seated, or the grind size being too fine for the bean type. Check the water tank and descale alert first.

Affected Models

  • DeLonghi Magnifica
  • DeLonghi Magnifica Evo
  • DeLonghi Dinamica
  • DeLonghi Eletta
  • DeLonghi Dedica
  • DeLonghi Primadonna

Common Causes

  • Scale buildup blocking the water circuit — descale required
  • Water tank empty, not seated correctly, or the float is stuck
  • Grind size too fine causing excessive resistance in the brew unit
  • Brew unit clogged with coffee residue — needs cleaning
  • Coffee beans empty or the hopper shutter closed
  • Air bubble in the water pump — machine priming required

How to Fix It

  1. Check the water tank.

Remove the water tank, confirm it is filled, and firmly reseat it. The tank has a valve at the bottom that must click into position. Also check the float inside the tank — if it is stuck at the bottom, the machine will show empty even when there is water.

  2. Check for a descale alert.

A scale-blocked machine produces little or no coffee even with a full water tank. If the descale indicator is lit, complete the descale process before expecting normal flow to return.

  3. Run a water-only rinse cycle.

Place a cup under the hot water outlet and run a hot water cycle (not espresso) for 30 seconds. This primes the pump if there is an air bubble and also gives you an indication of whether water is flowing at all. If no water comes out during the rinse cycle, the pump or water circuit has a fault.

  4. Adjust the grind size coarser.

If the machine grinds but produces no coffee or a very slow, thin trickle, the grind is too fine. Turn the grind adjuster one step coarser. Only adjust by one step at a time while the machine is grinding — never adjust the grinder when it is empty.

  5. Clean the brew unit.

Remove the brew unit (access via the left or right side panel on most DeLonghi automatics). Rinse it under cold water until the water runs clear. Do not use soap. Allow it to air dry before reinstalling. A clogged brew unit is a common cause of complete brewing failure on high-mileage machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

My DeLonghi makes grinding sounds but no coffee comes out — why?

Grinding with no output almost always means the coffee grounds are passing to the brew unit but the water is not flowing through — either the brew unit is clogged, the grind is too fine, or the machine needs descaling. Clean the brew unit first, then adjust the grind one step coarser.

Why does my DeLonghi produce only a few drops of espresso?

Very low output (drops rather than a shot) indicates a near-total blockage in the water path. The most common cause is a severely scaled boiler — the descale light may not have appeared yet if the counter was not set correctly. Run a descale cycle even if the indicator is not lit.
