Airwrap Not Turning On
Dyson Hair Styler
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Dyson Airwrap that will not turn on is most commonly caused by a blocked filter (the round filter screen under the removable cap at the handle base), an overheated machine, or a power cord fault. Clean the filter screen as the first step — this resolves the majority of Airwrap power failures.

- Dyson Airwrap Complete
- Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler
- Dyson Airwrap i.d.
- Dyson Airwrap Complete Long
Common Causes
- Filter screen blocked with hair and dust — thermal cut-out trips
- Machine overheated — thermal protection preventing restart
- Power cord damaged at the handle entry
- Internal fault — motor or electronics
How to Fix It
-
Remove and clean the filter screen.
The Airwrap's filter is a mesh screen under the removable cap at the bottom of the handle. Unscrew the cap counter-clockwise and lift out the filter screen. Rinse the screen under cold water, gently brushing away lint with the cleaning brush supplied with the Airwrap. Allow the screen to dry fully before reinserting — at least 1 hour.
-
Allow the machine to cool.
If the Airwrap was recently in use, allow 20 minutes of cool-down time in a well-ventilated area. Do not use it in a steam-filled bathroom — humidity affects the thermal sensor and can trigger premature heat protection.
-
Check the power cord.
Inspect the full length of the cord for kinks, pinch points, or fraying — particularly at the point where the cord enters the handle, which flexes most during use. Also check the plug prongs for damage. A damaged cord on a Dyson Airwrap is a warranty repair.
-
Try a different wall socket.
Test the Airwrap on a different circuit in the house. A tripped GFCI outlet in a bathroom is a common cause of sudden no-power situations — press the Reset button on any GFCI outlet in the bathroom.
-
Contact Dyson support.
Dyson Airwrap carries a 2-year warranty. If the filter is clean, the machine is cool, and it still will not power on, contact Dyson at dyson.com with the serial number from the product label for warranty service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean the Dyson Airwrap filter?
Unscrew the cap at the bottom of the Airwrap handle counter-clockwise. Remove the cylindrical filter screen. Rinse under cold running water. Use the small cleaning brush (included in the box) to brush the mesh in a downward direction. Tap the filter gently against the palm of your hand to dislodge debris. Allow to air dry for at least 1 hour before reinstalling and using.
Why does my Dyson Airwrap only work sometimes?
Intermittent Airwrap operation — works one day, does not the next — is almost always a partially blocked filter. A partially blocked filter allows the machine to start but triggers the thermal cut-out faster than normal. On good days the machine may run fine; on hot days or after longer use sessions, the reduced airflow triggers a shutdown. Cleaning the filter fully restores consistent operation.
