Brush Bar Not Spinning
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Dyson brush bar that won't spin is almost always caused by hair, thread, or fibres tangled around it to the point where it cannot rotate. Clearing the brush bar of hair and debris in under 5 minutes resolves this in the vast majority of cases.
Affected Models
- Dyson V15
- Dyson V12
- Dyson V11
- Dyson V10
- Dyson V8
- Dyson V7
- Dyson Ball Animal
- Dyson DC series
Common Causes
- Hair and fibre tangled around the brush bar preventing rotation
- Brush bar thermal cut-out triggered — motor overheated due to obstruction
- Large debris wedged in the cleaner head opening
- Brush bar not re-engaged after cleaning — the end-cap needs to be rotated back to lock
- Brush bar bearing worn on older machines
- Floor tool in the wrong mode — e.g. hard floor mode (brush bar off) selected for carpet
How to Fix It
-
Clear hair and fibres from the brush bar.
Remove the cleaner head from the wand. On most cordless Dyson models, turn the red or grey coin-slot fastener a quarter turn to remove the brush bar end cap. Slide out the brush bar. Use scissors to cut hair wrapped around it, then pull the strands clear. Re-insert, lock the end cap, and test.
-
Check the cleaner head mode.
Dyson cleaner heads have a mode selector: one setting for carpet (brush bar on) and one for hard floors (brush bar off). Look for a floor-type selector button or twist switch on the cleaner head. If the selector is set to hard floors while you are vacuuming carpet, the brush bar will not spin — this is intentional.
-
Check for and clear a thermal cut-out.
The brush bar motor has thermal protection — if it overheats from a blockage, it shuts off automatically. After clearing hair from the brush bar, let the machine rest (powered off) for 30–60 minutes. The thermal protection resets after cooling. Restart and test.
-
Check for debris blocking the cleaner head inlet.
Large items (coins, fabric pieces, socks) can lodge in the cleaner head's air inlet and physically block the brush bar from rotating. Turn the cleaner head over and inspect the opening. Use your hand or tweezers to remove any debris.
-
Replace the brush bar if bearings are worn.
On machines 4–5+ years old, the brush bar bearings can wear out. Signs: the brush bar turns but with noticeable resistance, or makes a grinding sound. Replacement brush bars are available from dyson.com and authorised parts retailers. The brush bar part number is in the Dyson app or manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Dyson brush bar keep stopping?
A Dyson brush bar that stops intermittently during use has hair or fibres building up on it during the session — once the tangle becomes tight enough, the thermal cut-out kicks in. Clean the brush bar thoroughly before each use if you vacuum pet hair or long hair regularly. Some Dyson models (V12 Detect Slim, V15 Detect) have a motorised brush bar with auto-detection that shows hair tangle levels on the LCD screen — these self-tangle-aware models are particularly easy to maintain.
