Filter Warning / Filter Light
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Dyson's filter warning (a blue or white flashing LED on cordless models, or a filter light on corded models) means the filter needs cleaning. Washing the filter under cold water and leaving it to dry for 24 hours clears the warning and restores suction.
Affected Models
- Dyson V15
- Dyson V12
- Dyson V11
- Dyson V10
- Dyson V8
- Dyson V7
- Dyson Ball Animal
- Dyson DC series
Common Causes
- Filter not cleaned in over a month — Dyson recommends monthly washing
- Filter installed while still damp — triggers warning on next use
- Filter damaged or not seated correctly
- Using in a very dusty environment that clogs the filter faster than usual
How to Fix It
-
Remove and wash the filter.
For Dyson cordless models: the filter is the purple/blue cyclinder at the top of the motor body. Twist anti-clockwise and pull to remove. For Ball models: the filter is near the bin area — check the user manual for exact location. Rinse under cold running water, squeezing gently until the water runs clear. Do not use detergent or a dishwasher — water only.
-
Allow the filter to dry for at least 24 hours.
This is the step most people skip — the filter must be completely dry before reinsertion. A wet filter restricts airflow, damages the motor, and may trigger the filter warning again immediately. Leave in a warm room or near (not on) a radiator. Never use a microwave or tumble dryer to speed up drying.
-
Have a spare filter for uninterrupted use.
Because the filter needs 24 hours to dry, having a spare filter means you can keep vacuuming while the washed one dries. Genuine Dyson filters cost £15–£25. The filter model number is printed on the filter itself — or find it in the Dyson app or on dyson.com using your machine serial number.
-
Check the filter is correctly seated.
After drying, reinsert the filter and twist clockwise until it clicks into place. A filter that is not fully locked can trigger warnings and cause suction loss. Turn the machine on and check whether the filter warning light has cleared.
-
Replace the filter if it is damaged.
Filters last approximately 1–2 years with monthly washing. If the filter is torn, permanently discoloured grey/black even after washing, or the mesh is visibly damaged, replace it. A damaged filter cannot be restored by washing — replacement is the only fix.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my Dyson with the filter warning light on?
You can use the Dyson briefly with the filter warning on, but performance will be reduced and continued use risks motor damage from restricted airflow. Dyson motors rely on the filter for cooling — running without a clean, properly seated filter shortens motor life. Wash the filter as soon as possible and always ensure it is dry before reinserting.
