No Suction / Weak Suction
Dyson Vacuum Cleaner
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Dyson vacuum suction loss is almost always caused by a full bin, a blocked filter, or a blockage in the wand, hose, or cleaner head. Empty the bin and check the filter first — this resolves suction problems in most cases.
Affected Models
- Dyson V15
- Dyson V12
- Dyson V11
- Dyson V10
- Dyson V8
- Dyson V7
- Dyson Ball series
- Dyson DC series
Common Causes
- Bin full — restricts airflow through the entire machine
- Filter clogged — most common cause of gradual suction loss
- Blockage in the wand, hose, or floor tool
- Bin not seated correctly after emptying — air bypassing the filter
- Washable filter still wet after cleaning
- Brush bar blocked with hair and fibres — affects floor pick-up
How to Fix It
-
Empty the bin.
Press the bin release button to empty the Dyson bin. For corded models, remove the bin and tap it gently to dislodge compacted dust. A bin more than half full noticeably reduces suction — empty it regularly, not just when completely full. Ensure the bin reattaches with a firm click.
-
Wash the filter.
On cordless Dyson models, the filter is at the top of the motor body (purple or blue cylinder). Remove it by twisting, rinse under cold water until the water runs clear, then tap to remove excess water. Leave to dry in a warm, well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours — putting a wet filter back causes motor damage. Wash monthly for best performance.
-
Check for a blockage.
Detach the wand from the main body and look through it — you should see light through the wand if clear. Check the hose, flexible reach hose, and all attachments. Look inside the cleaner head by removing it. Use a broom handle to push out any blockages. A tennis-ball-sized wad of debris in the wand is a very common cause of complete suction loss.
-
Clear hair from the brush bar.
Lay the Dyson floor tool on its back. On most models, the brush bar is accessible by pressing a coin-turn fastener. Cut and pull out hair and fibres wrapped around the bar. A heavily tangled brush bar cannot spin, which dramatically reduces floor pick-up even if suction is fine.
-
Ensure the bin seal and post-filter are correctly seated.
After emptying and washing, if the bin is not locked in correctly or the post-motor filter is not firmly seated, air bypasses the filtration and suction drops. Press the bin firmly back onto the body until it clicks. Ensure the HEPA post-filter (at the top or rear of the machine) is properly inserted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Dyson lose suction partway through vacuuming?
Suction that drops mid-session on a cordless Dyson is most often the battery entering a power-saving mode as it depletes — less battery charge means less motor speed and therefore less suction. On corded Dysons, suction drop mid-session usually means a filter is becoming blocked mid-use. If the motor sounds high-pitched or the machine feels very hot, clean the filter immediately.
