Won't Turn On / Cuts Out

Dyson Vacuum Cleaner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Dyson that won't turn on is most often due to a flat battery (cordless), a thermal cut-out triggered by overheating, or a blockage preventing the motor from running. Charge the battery fully and check for blockages before assuming a fault.

Affected Models

  • Dyson V15
  • Dyson V12
  • Dyson V11
  • Dyson V10
  • Dyson V8
  • Dyson V7
  • Dyson Ball series

Common Causes

  • Battery flat — cordless models need charging
  • Thermal cut-out triggered by a blockage causing motor overheating
  • Filter clogged, causing airflow restriction and heat build-up
  • Machine pulsing on and off — partial blockage causing intermittent airflow
  • Battery failed — will not hold charge
  • Power button faulty

How to Fix It

  1. Charge the battery fully.

For cordless models, place the Dyson on its wall dock or connect the charger cable. A full charge takes 3–4.5 hours depending on the model. The charging indicator turns solid when fully charged. If the machine turns on while on charge but not off it, the battery needs replacement.

  2. Check for and clear a blockage.

A machine that turns on then immediately turns off (pulsing) almost always has a blockage. Check the wand, hose, and cleaner head for obstructions — look through the wand toward a light to confirm it is clear. Also empty the bin — a full bin restricts airflow and can trigger cut-outs.

  3. Let the machine cool down.

If the Dyson was working and then suddenly shut off mid-use, the thermal cut-out activated. Turn the machine off and unplug or remove from the dock. Leave it to cool in a ventilated area for 30–60 minutes. Do not restart it until it is cool — the thermal protection does not reset until the motor temperature drops.

  4. Wash and dry the filter.

A blocked filter is the most common cause of the thermal cut-out activating. Wash the filter under cold water until clear. Leave for 24 hours to dry completely. Reinserting a wet filter worsens the situation — ensure it is bone dry before use.

  5. Test the battery health.

Connect the Dyson app (available for V11, V12, V15, and Outsize) to check battery health and fault codes. The app shows remaining battery capacity and any fault indicators. If the battery shows significantly reduced capacity or a fault code, replacement is the solution. Contactless Dyson support at dyson.com/support can also diagnose by serial number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Dyson turn on then immediately turn off?

Pulsing — turning on for 1–2 seconds then off — is Dyson's way of signalling a blockage. The machine detects that airflow has dropped to a dangerous level and cycles the motor to protect it. Remove every attachment one at a time and test the suction at each point to identify where the blockage is. Start at the cleaner head (the most common location), then work toward the motor body.
