E21

Electrolux Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E21 means your Electrolux washer cannot drain the water out after a cycle. The drum is still full of water and the machine has stopped. This is almost always a blocked filter or a kinked drain hose.

Affected Models

  • Electrolux EFLS627UTT
  • Electrolux EFLS527UTT
  • Electrolux EFL-Series
  • Electrolux ELFW7637AT
  • Electrolux ELFW7537AT

Common Causes

  • Drain pump filter blocked with lint, coins, or small objects
  • Drain hose kinked at the back of the machine
  • Drain hose outlet too high — water cannot flow uphill against gravity
  • Drain pump motor failed — pump is not spinning
  • Blocked household drain pipe that the washer hose connects to

How to Fix It

  1. Before anything, put towels on the floor. The drum still has water in it — some will spill when you open the filter.

E21 stops the cycle mid-drain, so there is likely several litres of water still inside the machine.

  2. Locate the drain pump filter — usually behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine. Open it and slowly unscrew the cap to let water drain out into a shallow bowl.

Draining slowly prevents a sudden flood. Have the bowl and towels ready before you unscrew anything.

  3. Remove the filter completely and clean out any lint, coins, hair, or small objects trapped inside.

Small items from pockets are the most common cause of E21. Even a single coin can block the pump enough to trigger the error.

  4. Check the drain hose at the back of the machine for kinks. Also make sure the hose outlet is not higher than 100cm from the floor.

The drain pump cannot push water uphill past a certain height. If the hose outlet is too high, the machine cannot drain efficiently.

  5. Refit the filter, close the panel, and run a spin-only or drain cycle to test.

A drain or spin cycle without laundry confirms whether the pump is now working and the error has cleared.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and hose does not fix E21, the drain pump has likely failed. Pump replacement costs roughly $80-150 in parts and is a moderately difficult DIY repair. A technician can replace it in about an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is water stuck in the drum — is it safe to open the door?

Do not open the door while the drum has water in it — it will flood the floor. Drain through the pump filter first using a shallow bowl. Once drained, the door lock will release and you can open it safely.

How often should I clean the drain filter?

Every 1-3 months, depending on how often you wash. Regular cleaning prevents E21 from ever appearing. It takes about 5 minutes and is the single best maintenance task for a front-load washer.

Can E21 damage the washing machine if I ignore it?

Not immediately — the machine just stops working until it is fixed. But leaving water sitting in the drum for days can cause mold and bad odours. Fix it the same day if possible.
