Not Spinning

Electrolux Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

An Electrolux washer that won't spin is most often caused by an unbalanced load, the spin speed set to 0, or a drainage issue preventing the spin phase from starting. Check the load balance and drain filter first.

Affected Models

  • Electrolux EWF series
  • Electrolux EWS series
  • Electrolux front-load washing machines

Common Causes

  • Laundry load unbalanced — heavy items on one side prevent spin
  • Spin speed manually set to 0 (No Spin) in the programme settings
  • Drainage problem — machine will not spin until water is drained
  • Child lock active — preventing cycle completion
  • Worn carbon brushes on the drive motor (older machines)
  • Drive belt broken or slipped off

How to Fix It

  1. Check the spin speed setting.

Many Electrolux machines have a separate spin speed selector or button. If it is set to 0 or the 'No Spin' symbol (a crossed-out circle), the machine will wash but not spin. Set the spin speed to the appropriate level for your laundry type (e.g. 1000–1400 rpm for cottons).

  2. Redistribute the laundry load.

Open the door and redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum. Heavy items like jeans or towels can clump on one side, causing the machine to detect an imbalance and skip the spin. Adding a few smaller items can help balance a load of heavy items.

  3. Check for a drainage error first.

If the machine still contains water, it will not spin. Check if an E20 drainage error is showing. Clean the pump filter (bottom-front panel) and check the drain hose for kinks. Once the machine drains, the spin cycle should complete.

  4. Run a spin-only cycle.

Select a Spin or Rinse + Spin programme directly. If this completes successfully, the main wash programme may have been interrupted. If the spin-only cycle also fails, the fault is in the spin mechanism itself.

  5. Have the motor brushes or drive belt checked.

On older Electrolux machines (10+ years), carbon brushes in the drive motor wear out and cause intermittent or no spinning. You may also hear a loud knocking or grinding during the spin attempt. A technician can check and replace brushes or the drive belt in a single service visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Electrolux washer not spinning but washing normally?

A machine that washes but does not spin almost always has the spin speed set to 0, an unbalanced load triggering the imbalance cut-out, or a drainage issue preventing spin. Check the spin speed dial first — it is the most commonly overlooked setting. If spin speed is correct, redistribute the laundry and run a standalone Spin cycle to test.
