E3

Frigidaire Dryer

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

E3 on a Frigidaire dryer means the dryer got too hot and a safety device tripped to stop it. This is always caused by restricted airflow — usually a blocked vent or clogged lint trap. Do not restart the dryer until you find and fix the cause.

Affected Models

  • Frigidaire Electric Dryer
  • Frigidaire Gas Dryer
  • Frigidaire Gallery Dryer
  • Frigidaire Affinity Dryer

Common Causes

  • The exhaust vent hose is blocked, kinked, or too long — trapping hot air inside
  • The lint trap is clogged and restricting airflow through the drum
  • The exterior vent flap is blocked by lint, a bird nest, or debris
  • The thermal limiter (a one-time safety fuse) has blown and needs replacing
  • The blower wheel inside the dryer is clogged with lint

How to Fix It

  1. Stop the dryer immediately. Unplug it and let it cool down for at least 30 minutes before touching anything inside.

Dryer components stay dangerously hot well after the cycle stops.

  2. Clean the lint trap completely. Pull it out and wash it under warm water if it looks coated with a waxy film from dryer sheets.

Even a partially blocked lint trap significantly restricts airflow and causes overheating.

  3. Go outside and check the dryer vent flap. It should open freely and swing shut when no air flows through. Clear any lint, leaves, or nesting material.

A blocked exterior vent is the most common cause of dryer overheating and E3.

  4. Check the vent hose behind the dryer. It should be as straight and short as possible. Replace any plastic accordion hose with rigid or semi-rigid metal ducting.

Plastic hoses trap lint and collapse easily. Metal ducting is safer and more efficient.

  5. After clearing all airflow blockages, have a technician test the thermal limiter with a multimeter. If it has no continuity, it must be replaced before the dryer will run.

The thermal limiter costs $5 to $20 for the part. It is located on the exhaust duct inside the dryer cabinet.

When to Call a Professional

Once overheating causes the thermal limiter to blow, it must be replaced — it cannot reset. Do not skip fixing the root airflow problem first, or the new limiter will blow again. A technician can replace the limiter and inspect the vent system for $100 to $180.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

At least once a year — more if you do many loads per week. A clogged vent wastes energy, shrinks clothes, and is a leading cause of house fires. A long vent brush kit costs under $20 and makes the job easy.

Will the dryer work again once I clean the vent?

Only if the thermal limiter is still intact. If E3 tripped the thermal limiter, it must be replaced even after the vent is clear. The dryer simply won't start with a blown limiter.

Can a blocked vent cause a house fire?

Yes — the U.S. Fire Administration reports roughly 2,900 dryer fires per year. The leading cause is failure to clean the lint trap and vent. E3 is the dryer telling you the situation is already dangerous. Take it seriously.
