E21

Frigidaire Washer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E21 means your Frigidaire washer started a drain cycle but could not empty the water within the allowed time. The drum is likely still partially or fully full of water. A clogged pump filter or blocked drain hose is the most common cause.

Affected Models

  • Frigidaire FFTW4120SW
  • Frigidaire FFTW1001PW
  • Frigidaire Gallery FGFW4065PW
  • Frigidaire Classic Series

Common Causes

  • The drain pump filter is clogged with lint, coins, or small items from pockets
  • The drain hose is kinked, pinched, or pushed too far into the standpipe
  • A small garment or object has become lodged inside the drain pump impeller
  • The drain pump motor has burned out and cannot move water
  • The household drain standpipe or utility sink is clogged and draining too slowly

How to Fix It

  1. Lay towels on the floor before opening the washer — the drum may be full of water.

On front-load Frigidaire washers, there is usually a small emergency drain hose behind the lower access panel. Use it to empty water into a shallow pan before opening the main door.

  2. Locate and clean the drain pump filter. On front-loaders it is behind the small panel at the bottom front of the machine.

Turn the filter cap slowly to drain remaining water, then pull it out completely. Rinse under running water and clear any debris inside the housing.

  3. Check the drain hose at the back of the washer for kinks or tight bends.

Straighten the hose along its entire length. Ensure it is not inserted more than 6 inches into the standpipe — too deep creates a siphon effect.

  4. Test the household standpipe or sink by pouring a bucket of water directly down it.

If the water drains slowly, the household plumbing is the problem. Call a plumber before blaming the washer.

  5. After clearing blockages, run a drain-and-spin cycle and listen for the pump motor.

You should hear the pump humming and see water flowing out of the drain hose within 30 seconds. No sound at all suggests a burned-out pump motor.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and drain hose does not resolve E21, the pump may be jammed or failed. A technician can safely access and test the pump — replacement typically costs $100 to $250.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between E20 and E21 on a Frigidaire washer?

E20 means the washer detected no drainage at all — the pump ran but no water moved. E21 means some water drained but not enough within the time limit — a partial restriction. Both point to a drain problem, but E21 often means a partial clog rather than a complete blockage.

How often should I clean the drain pump filter?

Frigidaire recommends cleaning the pump filter every 1 to 3 months. Households with pets, young children, or heavy laundry loads should clean it monthly. A quick monthly clean takes under 5 minutes and prevents most E21 errors.

Can too much detergent cause E21?

Yes — excessive foam from too much detergent is thick and difficult for the pump to push through the drain hose. Always use HE (high-efficiency) detergent in the amount recommended for your load size. More detergent creates more foam, not cleaner clothes.
