E4

GE Dishwasher

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E4 on a GE dishwasher means water is not draining from the tub after a wash cycle. Dirty water left sitting in the bottom is often the result. A clogged filter or drain hose is the most likely cause.

Affected Models

  • GE Built-In Dishwasher
  • GE Profile Dishwasher
  • GE Stainless Steel Dishwasher
  • GE Top Control Dishwasher

Common Causes

  • The dishwasher filter is clogged with food debris and needs cleaning
  • The drain hose is kinked, pinched, or blocked
  • The garbage disposal knockout plug was never removed during installation
  • The drain pump has failed and can no longer push water out
  • The sink drain or air gap is clogged, preventing water from exiting

How to Fix It

  1. Open the dishwasher and check the bottom of the tub for standing water. If water is pooled at the bottom, the drain is definitely blocked.

Scoop out the water with a cup and towels before proceeding.

  2. Remove the bottom rack. Unscrew or twist out the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub. Rinse it under running water to remove all food debris.

A clogged filter is the number one cause of GE dishwasher drain errors. Clean it monthly.

  3. Check the drain hose under the sink. It should not be kinked or pinched. The hose should loop up high (called a high loop) before connecting to the drain pipe or garbage disposal.

A missing high loop allows drain water to flow back into the dishwasher.

  4. If you have a garbage disposal, run it for 30 seconds to clear any blockage in the drain line connection.

If the disposal was recently installed and E4 appeared right away, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet may not have been removed. A plumber can fix this quickly.

  5. Reset the dishwasher after cleaning the filter by switching the circuit breaker off for 5 minutes. Run a short cycle and watch whether it drains at the end.

If E4 returns, the drain pump needs to be inspected or replaced.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and drain hose doesn't fix E4, the drain pump has likely failed. A failed pump cannot be repaired — it must be replaced. Expect $120 to $200 for parts and labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the dishwasher filter?

Once a month is ideal for most households. If you run the dishwasher daily or often wash heavily soiled dishes, clean it every two weeks. It only takes two minutes and prevents most drain errors.

Is standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher normal?

A small amount (under half an inch) can be normal — it keeps the door seal moist. But if the water is above the filter or has a bad smell, you have a drain problem. Clean the filter and check the hose.

Can I use the dishwasher if it shows E4?

Not effectively — dirty water that doesn't drain will be recirculated in the next cycle. This leaves dishes dirty and smelly. Fix the drain issue before running another load.
