E4

GE Washer

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

E4 on a GE washer means the drum detected an unbalanced load. The laundry shifted to one side and the washer stopped to protect itself. Open the door and redistribute the clothes to fix it.

Affected Models

  • GE Top Load Washer
  • GE Front Load Washer
  • GE Profile Washer
  • GE UltraFresh Front Load Washer

Common Causes

  • A single heavy item like a comforter or jeans tangled into a ball on one side
  • Too few items in the drum — small loads can shift easily during spin
  • Mixing very heavy and very light items in the same load
  • The washer is not sitting level on the floor — an unlevel machine tilts during spin
  • Worn or damaged suspension rods or shock absorbers are not controlling drum movement

How to Fix It

  1. Open the washer door when it is safe to do so. The machine will pause the cycle before showing E4.

On front loaders, wait for the drum to stop completely before opening.

  2. Reach inside and manually redistribute the clothes. Spread them evenly around the drum. Untangle any items that have balled up.

For large single items like blankets, try folding them loosely before restarting.

  3. Close the door and restart the cycle. The washer will retry the spin. Watch to see if it completes this time.

If the load balances correctly, the cycle will finish normally with no E4 code.

  4. If E4 keeps appearing on the same load, remove one or two items and run them separately. Very large or heavy items wash best alone.

Washing a single large blanket or comforter? Add a few towels to help balance the drum weight.

  5. Check that the washer is sitting level on the floor. Rock it gently — it should not wobble. Adjust the leveling feet underneath if it does.

Use a bubble level on top of the machine. All four feet should contact the floor firmly.

When to Call a Professional

E4 is almost always caused by the laundry — not the machine. If it happens on every single load regardless of size, the suspension system may be worn out. A technician can inspect the shock absorbers and suspension rods and replace them if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my GE washer keep getting E4 on every load?

If it happens constantly, the machine may not be level. Check all four leveling feet and adjust them so the washer sits flat. Worn shock absorbers can also cause this — a technician can check them.

Is E4 bad for my washer?

The washer stops itself specifically to avoid damage. Occasional E4 errors are normal and harmless. If it happens repeatedly, the unbalanced vibration over time can stress the drum bearings.

How do I prevent E4 errors in the future?

Do not overload or underload the drum. Aim for a medium-sized load — not packed tight, not just two items. Separate heavy items like jeans from light items like t-shirts when possible.
