E9

GE Washer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E9 on a GE washer means the washer tried to drain but could not empty the water in time. The drum may still be full of water when you open it. A clogged pump filter or blocked drain hose is the most common cause.

Affected Models

  • GE Top Load Washer
  • GE Front Load Washer
  • GE Profile Washer
  • GE UltraFresh Front Load Washer

Common Causes

  • The drain pump filter is clogged with lint, coins, or debris
  • The drain hose is kinked, crushed, or pushed too far into the standpipe
  • A sock, small garment, or object is lodged inside the drain pump
  • The drain pump motor has burned out or seized
  • The household drain standpipe is clogged and backing up

How to Fix It

  1. Do not open the washer door yet — the drum may be full of water. Place towels on the floor first.

On front-load washers, a small emergency drain hose is usually located behind the lower access panel. Use it to empty the water into a shallow pan before opening the door.

  2. Locate and clean the drain pump filter. On front-loaders it is behind the small door at the bottom front. On top-loaders it may be inside the agitator or accessible from the back.

Remove the filter, rinse it under water, and clear out any lint, coins, or debris trapped inside the housing.

  3. Check the drain hose at the back of the washer for kinks or blockage.

The drain hose should hang freely into the standpipe and not be pushed in more than 6 inches — too deep causes a siphoning problem.

  4. Check the household drain standpipe by pouring water down it from a bucket.

If the standpipe drains slowly, the household plumbing is backed up — not the washer. Call a plumber.

  5. Reassemble everything, plug the washer back in, and run a spin-only or drain cycle.

If you can hear the pump motor humming but water is not draining, something is still jammed inside the pump impeller.

  6. If the pump is silent when the drain cycle runs, the pump motor has likely burned out and needs replacement.

Call a technician — drain pump replacement is not difficult but does require partially disassembling the machine.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the filter and hose does not fix E9, the pump may be jammed or burned out. A technician can safely access and replace the drain pump — typical repair cost is $100 to $250.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to leave wet laundry in the washer while I fix E9?

For a short time, yes — but do not leave wet clothes sitting for more than a few hours. Standing water and damp clothes together can cause mildew and a musty smell very quickly. Drain the water and move the clothes to a bucket or bathtub while you troubleshoot.

How often should I clean the drain pump filter?

GE recommends cleaning the drain pump filter every 1 to 3 months depending on how often you use the machine. Households with pets or heavy laundry loads should clean it monthly. A clean filter prevents most E9 errors from ever occurring.

Why does my washer drain slowly but not show E9 every time?

Intermittent E9 usually means the blockage is partial — enough water gets through most of the time, but occasionally the drain times out. Clean the filter and hose even if the error is not consistent. Ignoring a partial blockage will eventually lead to a full jam and a drum full of water.
