Steam Release Not Working
Instant Pot Electric Pressure Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
An Instant Pot steam release valve that is stuck or not working is usually caused by food debris blocking the valve, the valve being in the wrong position, or a worn sealing ring preventing pressure from building in the first place. Clean the steam release valve after every cook cycle — it is the most neglected maintenance item.
Affected Models
- Instant Pot Duo
- Instant Pot Duo Plus
- Instant Pot Ultra
- Instant Pot Pro
- Instant Pot Lux
Common Causes
- Food debris or starch buildup blocking the steam release valve
- Steam release handle in the Sealing position when Venting was intended
- Sealing ring worn, cracked, or missing — pressure does not build so nothing releases
- Float valve (the small metal pin) stuck in the up position
- Anti-block shield on the underside of the lid is clogged
How to Fix It
-
Ensure the valve handle is in the correct position.
For pressure cooking: the handle must be turned to Sealing. For quick release: turn the handle to Venting. On Duo models, the valve clicks between two positions. If the valve is in Venting during pressure cooking, the pot will never pressurise and the steam will vent continuously.
-
Clean the steam release valve.
Remove the steam release handle — it simply pulls straight up off the valve stem. Rinse the handle under hot water and use a toothpick to remove any starch or food debris from the small hole in the underside. Wipe the valve stem on the lid with a damp cloth. Blocked valves are the most common cause of intermittent release issues.
-
Clean the anti-block shield.
The anti-block shield is a small perforated metal or plastic cap on the inside of the lid, directly below the float valve. Remove it (it either unscrews or clips off depending on model) and rinse thoroughly. Starchy foods like rice and oatmeal frequently block this shield, preventing steam from reaching the release valve.
-
Check the sealing ring.
Remove the sealing ring from the lid rim and inspect it for cracks, deformation, or missing sections. A damaged sealing ring prevents the pot from reaching pressure — if it never pressurises, there is nothing to release. Replace the sealing ring if it is more than 12-18 months old or shows any damage.
-
Check the float valve moves freely.
The small metal float valve (the pin that pops up when pressure builds) should move up and down freely. If it is sticky or stuck up, clean around it with a cotton swab. Food residue around the float valve can prevent it from dropping when pressure is released.
The steam release valve on an Instant Pot is a small but critical component that controls how and when pressure escapes the pot. Problems with this valve fall into two categories: the valve not releasing pressure when you want it to (quick release fails) and the valve venting continuously when it should be sealing (pot never pressurises).
The Two Valve Positions
On most Instant Pot models, the steam release handle has two positions: Sealing and Venting. During pressure cooking, the handle must be in the Sealing position. During quick pressure release, you turn it to Venting. If the handle is accidentally left in the Venting position when you start pressure cooking, the steam will continuously vent from the top and the pot will never reach pressure — this is not a fault, it is a user setting.
Food Debris: The Hidden Culprit
Starchy foods — rice, oatmeal, soup with pasta — frequently cause partial or full blockage of the steam release valve. As the food cooks under pressure, starch particles and foam are pushed upward and into the valve mechanism. Over time, residue builds up and the valve becomes sluggish or completely blocked. Cleaning the steam release handle after every single cook cycle — not just occasionally — prevents this accumulation.
When to Replace the Sealing Ring
The silicone sealing ring is the component most responsible for pressure-related problems. Instant Pot recommends replacing the sealing ring every 12-18 months under regular use. Signs that the ring needs replacement include visible cracking, a permanent deformed shape that no longer sits flat, or a strong odour that persists after washing. Many users keep two rings — one for savoury dishes and one for sweet — as silicone readily absorbs food odours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to force the steam release valve on an Instant Pot?
Never force the valve. If the valve handle is stuck or very hard to turn, the pot is under full pressure. A sudden forceful release can spray boiling liquid and cause serious burns. Allow the pot to natural release (wait until the float valve drops on its own) if the quick release valve is stuck.
Why does my Instant Pot keep venting steam from the sides of the lid?
Steam escaping around the lid rather than through the valve means the sealing ring is not sealing correctly. Check that the ring is seated evenly all the way around the lid rim with no pinched or lifted sections. If the ring is correctly seated and steam still escapes, the ring needs to be replaced.
