CE
LG Washing Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
CE on an LG washer means the motor is drawing too much current and has shut down to protect itself. The most common cause is an overloaded drum. Remove some laundry and restart.
Affected Models
- LG WM3900H
- LG WM4000H
- LG WT7300C
- LG F4V5
- LG direct-drive front-load washers
Common Causes
- Drum overloaded with too much laundry
- Worn drum bearings creating extra resistance
- Foreign object (coin, underwire) jammed in the drum or pump area
- Faulty motor inverter board
- Motor winding failure (less common)
How to Fix It
-
Reduce the laundry load to about three-quarters of the drum capacity and restart.
Overloading forces the motor to work harder, pushing current beyond its rated limit and tripping the CE protection. A lighter load is the most common and immediate fix.
-
Unplug the machine and rotate the drum by hand.
Open the door and turn the drum slowly. It should spin freely with no grinding or stiffness. Grinding points to worn bearings; any blockage points to a foreign object — both increase motor resistance.
-
Check the debris filter at the bottom front of the machine.
Place a towel below the small access panel, unscrew the filter cap, and inspect for coins, bra wires, or clips that may be causing resistance in the pump or lower drum area.
-
Unplug for 10 minutes to reset the motor protection circuit, then restart.
If the drum spins freely by hand and the load is a normal size, a full power reset may clear a one-time overcurrent trip.
When to Call a Professional
LG direct-drive motors are very reliable. If overloading is ruled out and the drum spins freely, the inverter board or motor needs professional testing. LG offers a 10-year motor warranty in many markets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does CE always mean the motor is broken?
No. Overloading is the most common cause of CE. Always try a reduced load before assuming a hardware fault.
Is LG's 10-year motor warranty valid for CE faults?
The warranty covers manufacturing defects. If CE was caused by overloading, it may not be covered. Contact LG support with your proof of purchase to check eligibility.
