AE2
LG Dishwasher
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
The AE2 error on an LG dishwasher means the leak sensor in the base pan has detected water where it should not be. LG uses a float sensor in the bottom of the machine — when water collects there, the float rises and triggers the AE2 alarm. This is a serious warning that water has escaped the wash tub somewhere. The machine will stop running to prevent a flood. Do not restart it until you have found and fixed the source of the water.
Affected Models
- LDF5545ST
- LDT7808SS
- LDFN4542S
- LDP6810SS
- LDT5678SS
- Most LG dishwashers with AquaStop or leak protection
Common Causes
- A cracked or loose drain hose fitting letting water drip into the base pan during drain cycles
- A worn or torn door gasket allowing water to escape the tub and run down into the base pan
- The water inlet valve has a slow leak that drips water into the base pan over multiple cycles
- A loose connection on the spray arm assembly or pump housing letting water spray internally into the base pan
- Excessive suds from wrong detergent overflowing the tub and soaking down into the base pan
How to Fix It
-
Stop the dishwasher immediately and do not run another cycle. Turn it off at the power button. Check the floor in front of and beside the dishwasher for any visible water. Place dry towels under the front of the machine to absorb any water draining from the base pan.
Even a small persistent leak can cause significant floor damage within a day or two. Act quickly.
-
Think back to what detergent was used. If anyone used dish soap, laundry detergent, or hand soap instead of dishwasher detergent, massive suds can overflow the tub and soak into the base pan. If suds overflow is the cause, run the rinse-only cycle two or three times to clear the suds, then dry the base pan.
One tablespoon of regular dish soap can generate enough suds to trigger AE2. Dishwasher detergent is specially formulated to produce minimal foam.
-
Pull the dishwasher partially out from the cabinet (disconnect power first). Look underneath with a flashlight for any visible water or wet spots. Trace the drain hose from the pump at the bottom of the machine to where it connects to the sink drain or garbage disposal. Feel along the hose for moisture and check that all clamps are tight.
A loose hose clamp is an easy DIY fix — just tighten it with a screwdriver. A cracked hose section needs to be replaced.
-
Tilt the dishwasher carefully forward about 45 degrees to drain any pooled water from the base pan. Lay towels down first. Once tilted, the water will run forward and out. Dry the float sensor and the base pan area with a cloth. This resets the float switch to its normal (down) position.
Disconnect power before tilting the machine. Have a helper assist you — a full-size dishwasher weighs 50-80 pounds.
-
After drying the base pan, reconnect power and reset the error by pressing and holding the Power button for 5 seconds, or unplugging for 10 minutes. Run a short cycle while watching carefully for any new drips from the door seal, underneath the machine, or at hose connections. If AE2 returns, call an LG-authorized technician.
LG's customer support line is 1-800-243-0000. Have your model number ready — it is on the sticker inside the door frame.
When to Call a Professional
AE2 means water is leaking somewhere inside your dishwasher. If you cannot identify a simple cause like suds or a loose hose, stop using the machine and call a technician. Unaddressed water leaks can warp wood floors, damage cabinets, and promote mold growth. A technician inspection costs $80-$150 and could prevent thousands in water damage repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AE2 different from the regular AE error on LG dishwashers?
Yes — the standard AE error typically indicates a general leak detection trigger. AE2 is a secondary or variant code that appears on newer LG models with more advanced leak detection systems. Both errors mean water has reached the base pan and the machine has stopped to protect your home. The troubleshooting steps are essentially the same for both.
Can AE2 cause permanent damage to my dishwasher?
AE2 itself does not damage the machine — it is the machine protecting itself. However, the underlying leak, if left unchecked, can corrode wiring, damage the motor, and rust out the base pan over time. Fix the leak promptly and the dishwasher should be fine.
Why does AE2 sometimes appear even when I cannot find any water?
The float sensor can occasionally stick in the raised position after a past leak even after the water has dried. In that case, tilting the machine to physically reset the float solves it. If AE2 keeps appearing with no evidence of water, the float sensor itself may be faulty and need replacement.
