d50

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

d50 is a Flow Sense warning on your LG dryer. It means the dryer has detected that airflow is reduced to about 50% of what it should be. This happens when the exhaust vent is partially blocked. Restricted airflow makes your dryer work harder, dry clothes slower, and increases the risk of overheating. Clean the vent soon — do not ignore this warning.

Affected Models

  • DLGX5501V
  • DLEX5500V
  • DLE3500W
  • DLGX4001W
  • LG electric and gas dryers with Flow Sense technology

Common Causes

  • Lint buildup inside the dryer exhaust duct reducing airflow
  • Crushed or kinked flexible duct hose behind the dryer
  • Bird or pest nest blocking the exterior vent cap
  • Vent hose that is too long or has too many bends slowing airflow
  • Exterior vent flap stuck partially closed by paint, debris, or warping

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint trap screen completely. Remove it, wash it with warm water and a soft brush, and let it dry before reinstalling.

A clean lint trap is the first line of defense. Always clean it before every load.

  2. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the flexible duct hose. Look for kinks, crushes, or sharp bends. The duct should run as straight as possible to the wall or floor vent.

Replace accordion-style plastic flex duct with rigid metal duct where possible. Plastic flex ducts trap lint and are a fire hazard.

  3. Go outside and locate the dryer exhaust vent on your home exterior. Check that the vent flap opens freely and that there is no debris, lint, or pest nesting material blocking the opening.

Press the flap open with your hand to confirm it moves freely. A stuck flap alone can trigger d50.

  4. Clean the interior of the duct run using a dryer vent cleaning brush kit (available at hardware stores for $15 to $30). Insert the brush from outside and work it toward the dryer.

If the duct run is long or through a wall, consider hiring a professional duct cleaning service for a thorough clean.

  5. Reconnect the dryer and run a timed dry cycle. The d50 warning should disappear as airflow improves. If it persists, the duct may still be partially blocked or too long for the installation.

LG recommends a maximum duct length of 35 feet with deductions for each elbow. Longer or more complex runs increase restriction.

When to Call a Professional

Lint duct cleaning is a DIY task that most homeowners can handle. For long or difficult duct runs through walls or attics, a professional duct cleaning service is safer and more thorough. Professional dryer vent cleaning costs $80 to $150 and significantly reduces fire risk. Never run a dryer with a confirmed blocked vent — house fires from dryer lint are the leading cause of appliance fires in the US.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my dryer vent duct?

At minimum, once a year. If you do many loads per week or have a long duct run, every 6 months is safer. A clogged dryer vent is a leading cause of house fires.

Will d50 go away on its own?

No. The Flow Sense system continuously monitors airflow. The d50 warning will stay on — and eventually escalate to d80, d90, or d95 — until the vent obstruction is cleared.

My vent looks clean — why do I still see d50?

The duct inside the wall may have lint buildup even if the exterior vent looks clear. Also check for a duct that is too long or has too many 90-degree elbows. Each bend in the duct adds equivalent length and increases restriction.
