d60

LG Dryer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

d60 is a Flow Sense warning meaning your LG dryer's exhaust airflow has dropped to about 60% of normal. This is more serious than d50 — your vent restriction has worsened. The dryer will run less efficiently, clothes will take longer to dry, and the risk of overheating increases. Clean the vent and duct thoroughly as soon as possible.

Affected Models

  • DLGX5501V
  • DLEX5500V
  • DLE3500W
  • DLGX4001W
  • LG electric and gas dryers with Flow Sense system

Common Causes

  • Significant lint buildup inside the exhaust duct requiring a thorough cleaning
  • Crushed or kinked flexible exhaust hose severely restricting airflow
  • Exterior vent flap nearly closed or stuck with debris and lint
  • Multiple 90-degree bends in the duct run creating high resistance to airflow
  • Exhaust duct that is too long exceeding LG's maximum recommended duct length

How to Fix It

  1. Remove and thoroughly clean the lint screen. Wash it under running water and scrub with a soft brush to remove fabric softener film that can partially block the mesh.

A dryer sheet residue film on the lint screen is invisible but can significantly reduce airflow. Hold the screen up to light to check for film coating.

  2. Disconnect the flexible duct hose from the back of the dryer and inspect its full length. Look for crushed sections, tight bends, or accumulated lint inside the hose itself.

If the flexible hose is an accordion-style plastic type, replace it with rigid metal duct. Plastic flex ducts trap lint and are not recommended.

  3. Go outside and check the dryer exhaust vent on your home's exterior. Clean out any lint, debris, or blockage from the vent opening and flap mechanism.

A mesh screen on the exterior vent (if present) should be removed — screens trap lint and are a fire hazard. Replace with an open-flap style vent cover.

  4. Use a dryer vent brush kit to clean the full length of the interior duct. Work from both ends if possible — from the dryer opening and from the exterior vent opening.

Brush kits with flexible rods are available at hardware stores for $15 to $30. They extend to clean ducts up to 30 feet long.

  5. Reconnect the dryer, run a timed dry cycle, and watch whether the Flow Sense warning changes. A successfully cleaned duct should show no Flow Sense warning within the first 5 minutes of operation.

If the warning persists after cleaning, the duct may be too long, have too many bends, or there may be a partial obstruction you missed.

When to Call a Professional

At 60% blockage, the dryer is working significantly harder than it should. If DIY vent cleaning does not bring the Flow Sense reading down below d50, hire a professional duct cleaning service. A professional cleaning costs $80 to $150 and is the safest approach for long or complex duct runs. Do not continue to ignore this warning — d60 will escalate to d80 and d95 if unaddressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

My lint screen is always clean — why am I getting d60?

The lint screen only catches a portion of the lint. The rest passes through and accumulates inside the duct over months and years of use. A clean lint screen does not mean a clean duct. Annual professional duct cleaning is still necessary.

Can d60 damage my dryer motor?

Yes, over time. When airflow is restricted, the motor works harder and the dryer runs hotter than designed. Prolonged operation with a blocked duct shortens the motor's lifespan and can damage the heating element. Cleaning the duct protects your investment.

How is LG Flow Sense different from just a high-temp cutout?

A thermal cutout shuts the dryer off only when it already overheats — it is reactive. Flow Sense proactively monitors airflow and warns you before overheating occurs. It gives you the chance to fix the problem before damage is done.
