FE
LG Washing Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
FE on an LG washing machine means the drum has overfilled with water. Immediately turn off the water supply tap behind the machine, then run a drain cycle to empty the drum safely.
Affected Models
- LG WM3900H
- LG WM4000H
- LG WT7300C
- LG F4V5
- LG front-load and top-load washers
Common Causes
- Water inlet valve stuck open and unable to close
- Failed water level pressure switch sending incorrect signals
- Kinked or blocked pressure hose between drum and pressure sensor
- Control board continuously signalling the valve to fill
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the water supply tap behind the machine immediately.
This stops more water from entering. If the inlet valve is stuck open, water will keep flowing until the supply is physically shut off.
-
Run a drain or spin-only programme to empty the drum.
Do not open the door until the drum is drained. Use the shortest drain cycle available to remove the water safely.
-
Inspect the water inlet valve for a stuck solenoid.
Unplug the machine and disconnect the inlet hose. A healthy valve closes completely when power is removed. If water still trickles through the disconnected valve body, the solenoid has failed and the valve must be replaced.
-
Check the pressure hose between the drum and pressure sensor for kinks or blockages.
The small rubber hose connects the drum to the pressure switch. Blow through it gently — it should be completely clear. A blocked hose prevents the pressure switch from detecting the water level.
-
Test the pressure switch.
The pressure switch tells the machine when the drum is full. A faulty switch may never signal 'full,' causing continuous filling. A technician can test and replace it.
When to Call a Professional
If the inlet valve and pressure switch both test correctly but FE persists, the control board is at fault. Contact LG support or a certified appliance engineer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can too much detergent cause FE?
Excess foam can occasionally confuse the pressure sensor and trigger FE on some models. If this happened after using more detergent than usual, run a rinse-and-spin cycle and use less detergent going forward.
Will FE cause flooding if ignored?
Yes. If the inlet valve is stuck open and the machine is left unattended, water will overflow the drum and flood the floor. Always turn off the water supply when FE appears.
