bE1

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

LG washer error bE1 means the control panel has detected a button that is being held down or is stuck. The washer cannot accept commands properly when a button is in a constant pressed state, so it stops and displays bE1. This is usually a stuck button, debris under a button, or something resting against the control panel.

Affected Models

  • LG WM3900HBA
  • LG WM4000HBA
  • LG WM3500CW
  • LG WT7300CW
  • LG WM3700HVA

Common Causes

  • A button on the control panel is physically stuck in the pressed position due to debris or wear
  • A laundry basket, detergent bottle, or other object is pressing against the control panel
  • Moisture from splashed water or a wet hand has seeped under a button and is holding the contact closed
  • The rubber membrane behind the button panel has deteriorated and is making permanent contact
  • The main control board has a fault and is falsely detecting a button press

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer from the wall and wait 60 seconds. Plug it back in. This power reset clears any temporary electronic glitch causing a false button detection.

If the error does not reappear after the reset, it was likely a one-time fault. Monitor the washer over the next few cycles.

  2. Check around the washer for anything that could be pressing against the control panel — laundry baskets, shelving items, or folded clothes resting on top of the machine.

Objects placed on top of a front-load washer can shift and press down onto the control panel buttons.

  3. Press each button on the control panel one at a time, firmly and then releasing it. Feel carefully for any button that does not spring back, feels stiffer than the others, or sits slightly lower.

Work through every button systematically. A stuck button is often subtle — it may feel only slightly different from the others.

  4. Use a dry toothbrush or soft brush to clean around the edges of all buttons. Carefully remove any lint, dust, or dried liquid residue caught in the gaps around the buttons.

Never spray water or liquid cleaner directly onto the control panel. Moisture inside the panel will cause additional problems.

  5. Plug the washer back in and run a short test cycle. If bE1 reappears immediately, a technician needs to inspect the control panel membrane or main control board.

On some LG models, the display will show which specific button is detected as stuck — check the manual for your model to read this diagnostic.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning around the buttons and removing all obstructions does not fix bE1, the button membrane or main control board needs professional inspection. LG service technicians can diagnose which button is at fault and whether the membrane overlay or the board itself needs replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a child accidentally trigger bE1?

Yes. If a child presses and holds a button for an extended period, some LG models interpret this as a stuck button and display bE1. Check that the Child Lock feature (CL) is enabled to prevent children from accessing the control panel.

My washer shows bE1 only in hot weather. Is the heat causing it?

Possibly. High temperatures can cause the plastic button membrane to expand slightly, which sometimes creates constant contact on a borderline button. If the error only appears in warm conditions and disappears when the room cools, the button membrane is likely worn and should be replaced.

How much does it cost to fix bE1?

If the fix is just cleaning debris from around a button, the cost is nothing. If the button membrane overlay needs replacing, parts typically cost $20–$60 depending on the model. If the main control board is the cause, expect to pay $150–$350 for the part plus labour.
