IE

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

LG IE means the machine is not filling with water fast enough. The water supply tap being closed or the inlet filter being clogged are the most common causes — both are quick to check and fix.

Affected Models

  • LG TurboWash series
  • LG F series front-loaders
  • LG V series front-loaders
  • LG Direct Drive series

Common Causes

  • Water supply tap closed or partially open
  • Inlet hose kinked or crushed
  • Inlet filter mesh blocked with sediment
  • Water pressure below 0.5 bar minimum
  • Inlet valve solenoid failed
  • Machine connected to hot water only on a cold-water-only inlet

How to Fix It

  1. Check the water supply tap.

The tap (or taps) connecting the washing machine to the household water supply should be fully open. Turn anti-clockwise until it will not go further. This is the quickest check and resolves IE in roughly half of all cases.

  2. Inspect the inlet hose.

Pull the machine forward slightly. Check the blue (cold) and red (hot) hoses at the back for kinks or bends. Straighten any restrictions. Also confirm the machine has not been pushed hard against the wall, crushing the hoses.

  3. Clean the inlet filter mesh.

Turn off the water supply. Unscrew the inlet hose from the back of the machine (have a towel ready). Inside the inlet connection on the machine there is a small mesh filter. Remove it with tweezers, rinse under the tap to clear sediment, refit, and reconnect the hose tightly.

  4. Use LG SmartDiagnosis.

Open the LG ThinQ app and use SmartDiagnosis to get a specific component reading. Hold the phone near the SmartDiagnosis logo on the machine door and follow the on-screen prompts. The app will indicate whether IE is caused by low pressure, inlet valve failure, or a sensor issue.

  5. Have the inlet valve tested.

If water supply and hoses are fine and IE persists, the inlet solenoid valve may have failed. The valve opens when a cycle starts — listen for a clicking or buzzing from the back of the machine in the first minute. No sound indicates electrical failure of the valve. Valve replacement requires a service engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IE mean on an LG washing machine?

IE stands for Inlet Error — the machine could not fill with water within the time limit. The most common cause is the water supply tap not being fully open. Check this first: it takes 5 seconds and fixes IE more than half the time. If the tap is fully open, clean the inlet filter mesh inside the hose connection — this takes 5 minutes and has no tools required.
