OE

LG Washing Machine

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

LG OE means the washing machine failed to drain water within the expected time. Cleaning the drain pump filter behind the access panel at the front-bottom of the machine resolves OE in the majority of cases.

Affected Models

  • LG TurboWash series
  • LG F series front-loaders
  • LG V series front-loaders
  • LG Direct Drive series
  • LG WM series

Common Causes

  • Drain pump filter blocked with lint, coins, or small items
  • Drain hose kinked, crushed, or inserted too deep into the standpipe
  • Household drain pipe blocked or slow
  • Drain pump impeller jammed by a foreign object
  • Drain pump motor failed electrically

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the drain pump filter.

Open the small access panel at the bottom-front of the LG washer. Pull out the emergency drain tube (a small hose with a cap) and drain the water into a bowl first. Then unscrew the pump filter cap anti-clockwise and remove it. Clean out all debris — lint, coins, hair, small clothing items. Rinse the filter under the tap. Replace and tighten, then run a Spin cycle to test.

  2. Check the drain hose.

Inspect the grey corrugated hose at the back of the machine. Straighten any kinks or bends. The hose should not be inserted more than 15 cm (6 inches) into the standpipe — over-insertion causes siphoning. Check that the machine has not been pushed against the hose, crushing it.

  3. Use the LG SmartDiagnosis feature.

LG washing machines have SmartDiagnosis — hold your phone's microphone near the machine's SmartDiagnosis symbol, open the LG ThinQ app, and start a diagnosis. The app communicates with the machine and can identify the specific component causing the OE error. This is the fastest way to confirm whether it is a filter, hose, or pump fault.

  4. Check the household drain.

Pour a bucket of water into the standpipe or sink drain where the hose empties. If water backs up or drains very slowly, the household drain is blocked rather than the machine. Clear the household drain before retesting the washing machine.

  5. Have the drain pump inspected.

If the filter is clean and hoses are clear, start a Spin cycle and listen. A hum without water movement suggests a jammed impeller. Silence during drain suggests motor failure. LG drain pump replacement requires a service engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix OE on my LG washing machine?

Start with the drain pump filter — the most common cause of OE and the easiest fix. The filter is behind a small rectangular door at the front-bottom of the machine. Use the emergency drain hose first to empty water before removing the filter cap. Clean the filter thoroughly and run a Spin cycle. In most cases OE will not return after the filter is cleaned.
