F51
Miele Washing Machine
Severity: CriticalWhat Does This Error Mean?
F51 means your Miele washer has detected a motor fault — the drum is not spinning or the motor is drawing abnormal current. The most common cause is an overloaded drum, but worn motor brushes and wiring faults are also frequent culprits. An overload reset often clears a one-off F51; recurring errors mean the motor or its brushes need professional inspection.
Affected Models
- W1 Classic
- W1 TwinDos
- WCR860
- WDB020
- WCI660
Common Causes
- Drum overloaded — too much laundry preventing the motor from reaching speed
- Worn motor carbon brushes causing poor electrical contact
- Foreign object (clothing item, sock) wedged between the drum and the tub
- Motor winding failure due to age or overheating
- Faulty motor speed sensor (tachometer) sending incorrect feedback to the control board
How to Fix It
-
Press Start/Stop to cancel the current cycle and wait for the door to unlock (up to 2 minutes).
Do not try to open the door while water is in the drum — wait for the lock to release naturally.
-
Open the door and remove at least half the laundry. An overloaded drum is the most common cause of F51.
Miele recommends filling the drum to about 80% capacity — clothes should be able to tumble freely.
-
Unplug the washer from the wall outlet and wait 5 minutes to allow the motor thermal protection to reset.
Motors that have been straining against an overload get hot and cut out — the 5-minute wait lets them cool.
-
Reach inside the drum and spin it by hand. It should rotate smoothly with moderate resistance. If it feels stiff, gritty, or will not turn, something may be lodged between the drum and the outer tub.
Check around the drum seal for any small items that may have slipped through.
-
Plug the washer back in and start a short Rinse/Spin cycle with a small load to test the motor.
A Rinse/Spin cycle puts less demand on the motor than a full wash and confirms whether the fix has worked.
-
If F51 returns on a small load with a freely spinning drum, book a technician — do not continue using the machine as running a failing motor can cause further damage.
Continued use with a failing motor can damage the control board, making an inexpensive brush replacement into a much costlier repair.
When to Call a Professional
If removing laundry and doing a power reset does not clear F51, the motor brushes or motor itself need professional assessment. Miele uses brushed AC motors on older models and brushless motors on newer W1 series — the repair approach differs between them. Contact a Miele-certified technician who can measure motor resistance and confirm whether brushes, the motor, or the control board is at fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Miele washer has motor brushes that need replacing?
On older Miele models with brushed motors, you may notice the drum struggling to spin or occasional sparking sounds during a cycle before F51 appears. A technician can measure brush length — replacement is typically needed every 8 to 12 years.
Can F51 appear on a brand new Miele washer?
It is very rare but possible if the machine was delivered and installed without removing the transit bolts. If the washer is new and F51 appears, check that all yellow transit bolts at the back have been removed.
Is F51 an expensive repair?
It depends on the cause — motor brush replacement is inexpensive (around $50 to $100 in parts). A full motor replacement on a Miele is more costly ($200 to $500 in parts plus labour), but Miele machines are built to last and the repair is usually worth it.
