4E
Samsung Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
4E on a Samsung washing machine means the machine is not receiving enough water. Check that both water inlet taps are fully open, the inlet hose is not kinked, and the inlet filters are not blocked with sediment.
Affected Models
- Samsung WF45R
- Samsung WA50R
- Samsung WF42H
- Samsung WF56H
- Samsung AddWash series
Common Causes
- Water supply tap partially or fully closed
- Inlet hose kinked or crushed behind the machine
- Inlet filter mesh screens clogged with sediment
- Low water pressure in the home water supply
- Inlet valve fault preventing water from entering
How to Fix It
-
Check that both hot and cold water taps behind the machine are fully open.
The hot and cold supply taps must both be turned counter-clockwise as far as they will go. A partially closed tap causes slow fill and triggers 4E.
-
Pull the machine out and inspect the inlet hoses for kinks or crushing.
When pushed back against the wall, hoses often kink behind the machine. A kinked hose restricts or stops water flow completely.
-
Clean the inlet filter screens where the hoses connect to the machine.
Unscrew each hose from the back of the machine and remove the small mesh filter screens. Rinse under running water to remove any sediment build-up, then reattach.
-
Test your home water pressure by running a tap — if flow is very low, the issue is the supply, not the machine.
Samsung washers require minimum 0.5 bar water pressure. Very low household pressure (common in top-floor flats) prevents the machine from filling fast enough.
When to Call a Professional
If the water supply is confirmed open, hoses are clear, and filters are clean but 4E persists, the inlet valve solenoid has failed. Contact Samsung support or a washing machine engineer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4E the same as E1 on older Samsung washers?
Yes — older Samsung models display E1 for the same no-water-supply error. Newer models with digital displays show 4E. The cause and fix are identical.
My Samsung 4E error appeared suddenly with no changes — what happened?
A sudden 4E with no changes usually means the inlet filter became blocked overnight from sediment in the water supply, or the inlet valve is beginning to fail. Clean the inlet filters first — this resolves most sudden 4E errors.
