IE
Samsung Washing Machine
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The IE error on a Samsung washer indicates an inlet water error — the machine started a cycle but did not receive water within the expected time. IE is similar to the E1 and 4E errors on newer Samsung models and means the same thing: water supply problem. This is usually caused by the water taps being off, kinked hoses, clogged inlet filters, or a faulty water inlet valve. It is not a serious mechanical failure — the water supply is the first thing to check.
Affected Models
- Older Samsung front-load and top-load washers that display IE instead of 4E
- WF337AAG
- WF328AAW
- WF330ANB
- Samsung washers manufactured prior to 2012 that use the IE error code format
Common Causes
- Hot or cold water supply tap behind the washer is turned off or only partially open
- Water inlet hose is kinked, bent, or crushed behind the machine preventing water flow
- Inlet hose filter screens are clogged with sediment or debris from the water supply
- Water inlet valve has failed and is not opening to allow water into the drum
- Home water pressure is too low — Samsung washers require at least 20 psi to fill correctly
How to Fix It
-
Check both water supply taps at the back of the washer. Make sure both the hot and cold taps are fully open — turn them all the way counterclockwise.
It is easy to accidentally knock a tap to the half-open position when moving the washer. This is the most common and easiest cause to fix.
-
Inspect the water inlet hoses for kinks or sharp bends. Pull the washer slightly forward if needed to access the hoses. Straighten any bent sections.
Hoses are often kinked when the washer is pushed too close to the wall. Leave at least 4 inches of space behind the machine.
-
Turn off both water taps and disconnect the hoses at the back of the washer. Look inside the hose connection ports — there are small mesh filter screens. Remove and rinse them under a tap or clean with a small brush if clogged.
Sediment from water pipes gradually clogs these filters over time. Cleaning them restores full water flow.
-
Reconnect the hoses, turn the water back on, and start a new cycle. Watch for water entering the drum in the first couple of minutes.
If water flows immediately, the problem is resolved. Run a complete cycle to confirm.
-
If water still does not enter, test your home water pressure by filling a bucket from the tap behind the washer — it should fill a 1-gallon bucket in under 30 seconds. Low pressure requires a plumber to diagnose. If pressure is fine, the inlet valve has likely failed and needs replacement.
You can hear the inlet valve click when the washer tries to fill. No click at all can indicate a wiring or valve fault.
When to Call a Professional
If taps, hoses, and filters are all clear and the washer still shows IE, the inlet valve likely needs replacement. The valve is not user-serviceable in most cases — a technician can test it and install a replacement for $120 to $250.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IE the same error as 4E on Samsung washers?
Yes — IE and 4E mean the same thing. Older Samsung washers use IE to indicate a water inlet error. Newer models display 4E or E1 for the same fault. The diagnosis and fix steps are identical regardless of which code your model shows.
Can cold weather cause an IE error?
Yes — in very cold weather, the water supply pipes leading to the washer can freeze. If water cannot flow through frozen pipes, the washer will show IE. In this case, warming the supply pipes (not the hoses with open flame) is the fix. Insulating pipes in unheated areas prevents this.
How long does a water inlet valve last on a Samsung washer?
Typically 10 to 15 years. Minerals in hard water gradually coat the valve seats and eventually prevent the valve from opening fully. Regular cleaning of the filter screens extends valve life by reducing the sediment load on the valve internals.
